Overclocking RPI4 SDRAM? [not possible!]

Tue Aug 20, 2019 8:27 am

On the RPI3 computer you can overclock the ram with the sdram_freq=500, and over_voltage_sdram=8 parameters added to /boot/config.txt, don't know if you can overclock the ram on RPI4 computers here is a link to a guide on how to overclock RPI computers:

How about adding an SSD to the USB drive then add swap file to the SSD I know this is possible on Windows PC don't know about Linux, here is a article about adding M.2 SSD to RPI4 computer:

Split off from thread replacing the SDRAM on a PI4.

p.s. (and good luck with that!)

Appears I will have to continue on my own involving this conversation about RPI RAM speeds this topic is not a topic that I would actually write
about on the RPI forums I would actually write about something completely different, with the RPI3 computers the RPI3 uses LPDDR2 ram with memory speeds at 500 MHz the RPI4 uses LPDDR4 RAM with memory speeds at 3200 MHz, and according to this chart from TweakTown DDR4 memory should at least be 6 times faster in comparison to DDR2 memory:

The reason why this chart is necessary is because, overclocking the RAM on the RPI3 computer would be more important in comparison to overclocking the RAM on the RPI4, if you decided to overclock the RAM on the RPI3 computer from 500 MHz to 600 MHz that would be considered a 20% increase in performance did not try this myself, the same can be said about the RPI4 computers, increasing the RAM memory speeds from 3200 MHz to 3840 MHZ that is a 20% increase in memory speeds if overclocking memory speeds was available, I can talk about this topic all day anyhow to compare base clock speeds to overclocked clock speeds here is a old video about overclocking the RPI computer this video does not mention overclocking the RAM:

You cannot overclock the SDRAM controller on Pi 4. Previous options in config.txt for sdram frequency have no effect. There are only a few operating points defined for SDRAM speed (1350/2400/2667/3200) and we are using the fastest one.

If you are using the RPI4 1 GB computer your will use swap space more often, because the RPI3 computer has 1 GB of RAM watching a 720p video on YouTube while using Firefox will use over half the RAM available on the computer which means the 1 GB computers are completely usable due to the fact the computer still has RAM available we all know 720p video is not nearly the same as 1080p video, actually before the Raspbian Buster update watching 720p video using Chromium or Firefox was not usable at all.

Overclocking can benefit all RPI computers not only 1 GB RPI computers or RPI computers with less RAM overclocking can reduce load times, improve overall system response, the downside overclocking leads to computer instability, the base clock speeds are completely usable for the people who are more familiar with the RPI computer those people can benefit from overclocking without damaging the computer, anyhow here is a video about overclocking the RPI3B+:

Not correct, it is LPDDR4-2400:

The specification is missleading. The SDRAM data rate for Pi4 is 3200 Mbps by default
