YouTube on Raspberry Pi 4 Choppy!!

Wed Aug 07, 2019 9:57 pm

I am considering on purchasing a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB RAM and a Flirc Case. However, I am concerns about the choppy youtube video issues mentioned online and only 720 dpi. I am also concerned about a choppy mp4 video playback. Will this be a temporary setback?! Is it a hardware or just a software issue??

YouTube playback is very smooth for me on a 2GB Pi4b, as long as I use a 1080p monitor, or avoid fullscreen on a 4k monitor.

This problem is known and software support for the Pi 4 is early. Give it a few months and it should become usable ;)

Just to make sure I understand your question, did you actually mean 720p (720 progressive lines of video, which ought to work fine on a RPi) rather than 720 dpi (dots per inch in a monitor, which would most likely be very hard for a RPi to handle)?

I don't think there's a monitor/TV that can possibly make use of 720dpi.

That's because there isn't.
DPI refers to HID devices.
On a monitor, it would be PPI or LPI
Assuming PPI, 806 (current highest pixel density available) is possible, which on a 5.5" screen is 4K

The ETA PRIME YouTube channel has a video that shows the RPI4 running YouTube with Chromium, and VLC Media Player running high resolution MP4 videos, supports 720P videos don't know about 4K video using VLC or 1080P video using Chromium I don't know if the RPI4 will run videos at full speed with the YouTube video player with full screen enabled, here is a link to the ETA PRIME video:

unfortunately you are correct for the time being the videos above 720p are choppy in youtube.
walmart sells smartphone for 28 dollars that can play 1080p video from youtube just fine, it might even be a better experience you can try that?

I have not used it, but my understanding was a dedicated media player (LibreElec / Kodi) running on the RPi4 can play 1080p video smoothly. It looks like Kodi has a plug-in so that it can play video from YouTube directly, although it may be tricky to setup. https://forum.kodi.tv/

Hmm.. I have tried various formats. in youtube i think everything is choppy over 720p

regarding VLC
It would be nice for you guys if anyone could drop some links to some samples. Maybe i dont have or using the correct codec or something.. In LibreELEC it works pretty good actually but not so good in Raspbian-VLC

Enable X11-MMAL-Splitter.
In VLC switch to full screen mode. All videos will play fine.

If it helps any, in Raspbian I have my RAM split set to 640MB.
I honestly do not see any choppiness no matter what I try to play (video in VLC, YouTube 1080p video, etc) provided I don't use fullscreen on a 4k monitor as I mentioned earlier. In windowed mode it works flawlessly for me.

Its almost a year after the release , and the problem still persist .

I use Pi4 with 4 GB RAM.

Cannot play 1080p videos from youtube smoothly. 720p looks fine , but still not smooth enough , like framerate is 23 - almost comfortable.
On 1080p video slows every few seconds and continue as usual. Sounds works fine.

What i tried to do :

Split ram 320/520/640mb for GPU
Overclock to 1750/650
Installed Raspbian/Ubuntu / kodi OS/Chromium OS
Tested with firefox and kweb (kweb dont play videos AT ALL)

Any ideas , what else can be done ?
Another OS? Browser ? Drivers?

Please , advise !

* Using fulHD (1080p) panel with it , connected with hdmi cable

If people would only read manuals ...
Both Firefox and kweb do not use HW acceleration for video (only chromium).

I suppose you did not enable Javascript in kweb, if it doesn't show the video.

In kweb it's really simple to watch the video in high quality: Click the "Play" button.

As above, we have spent a lot of time optimising Chromium to use HW acceleration. We have not done anything on Firefox or Kweb - one browser is enough!

So does the problem persist in Chromium?

Chromium was default choice, when it didn't perform , switched to another browser.

My personal experience with the Pi 4 4GB even on the latest raspbian is 1080p youtube is visibly choppy and 720p is smooth (Stats for nerds does show dropped frames albeit I don't notice them).

1080p local video playback is fine.

This is even with a recent fresh install using Chromium with or without full screen.

Browsers are a PITA to get decent video in. There is a LOT of copying of full frames going on to get the video on the display. Limited bandwidth devices like the Pi will struggle if that pathway through the browser is too constrained. Our mods to Chromium help with that. And I believe that even the Chromium developers are trying to improve the situation by reducing the number of copies being made.

We are continuing to work on it.

With a good internet connection, not using 4k video you will most likely not experience any choppy footage, however at the start of a video it may take longer than you are used to
Running either Raspberry Pi OS desktop Full or Raspberry Pi OS MATE desktop
Overclocked at 2200MHz CPU and 700 MHz GPU with a over voltage of 7

Youtube videos on the Pi 4 in Chromium are indeed choppy even on a fresh "stock" raspbian image. Whats more, with h264ify enabled, last I checked they don't even play, you only get a grey screen with an error saying video is unavailable, so on stock ver 78. Chromium, you are able to play videos in VP9 coding (no hardware acceleration for that one in Pi 4).
After changing to ver. 80 Chromium, youtube videos do play even with h264ify, but you still get no hardware acceleration (you can check with vcgencmd that the operating frequency of the h264 unit stays at zero when playing h264 youtube videos), hence they get choppy especially at 1080p.

With VLC, video playpack is fine.

I use the standard Raspian Chromium (ver.78) and I've got h264ify enabled. I've been able to play YouTube videos just fine? (No comments on performance though, my standards are pretty low as I tend to not notice slow framerates and such)

i have no problems on youtube, but i'm simple i just leave it on "auto" & let it pick what it can handle, depending on the time of day(peak hours) my internet speeds vary.

sometimes i get 720, most times i get 480. using h264 just gives lower cpu use to me, i do have the 60fps blocked.
