YouTube on Raspberry Pi 4 Choppy!!

Wed Aug 07, 2019 9:57 pm

I am considering on purchasing a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4 GB RAM and a Flirc Case. However, I am concerns about the choppy youtube video issues mentioned online and only 720 dpi. I am also concerned about a choppy mp4 video playback. Will this be a temporary setback?! Is it a hardware or just a software issue??

YouTube playback is very smooth for me on a 2GB Pi4b, as long as I use a 1080p monitor, or avoid fullscreen on a 4k monitor.

This problem is known and software support for the Pi 4 is early. Give it a few months and it should become usable ;)

Just to make sure I understand your question, did you actually mean 720p (720 progressive lines of video, which ought to work fine on a RPi) rather than 720 dpi (dots per inch in a monitor, which would most likely be very hard for a RPi to handle)?

I don't think there's a monitor/TV that can possibly make use of 720dpi.

That's because there isn't.
DPI refers to HID devices.
On a monitor, it would be PPI or LPI
Assuming PPI, 806 (current highest pixel density available) is possible, which on a 5.5" screen is 4K

Clearly a typo or misunderstanding of the correct term by OP

The ETA PRIME YouTube channel has a video that shows the RPI4 running YouTube with Chromium, and VLC Media Player running high resolution MP4 videos, supports 720P videos don't know about 4K video using VLC or 1080P video using Chromium I don't know if the RPI4 will run videos at full speed with the YouTube video player with full screen enabled, here is a link to the ETA PRIME video:

unfortunately you are correct for the time being the videos above 720p are choppy in youtube.
walmart sells smartphone for 28 dollars that can play 1080p video from youtube just fine, it might even be a better experience you can try that?

I have not used it, but my understanding was a dedicated media player (LibreElec / Kodi) running on the RPi4 can play 1080p video smoothly. It looks like Kodi has a plug-in so that it can play video from YouTube directly, although it may be tricky to setup. https://forum.kodi.tv/

Hmm.. I have tried various formats. in youtube i think everything is choppy over 720p

regarding VLC
It would be nice for you guys if anyone could drop some links to some samples. Maybe i dont have or using the correct codec or something.. In LibreELEC it works pretty good actually but not so good in Raspbian-VLC

Enable X11-MMAL-Splitter.
In VLC switch to full screen mode. All videos will play fine.
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

If it helps any, in Raspbian I have my RAM split set to 640MB.
I honestly do not see any choppiness no matter what I try to play (video in VLC, YouTube 1080p video, etc) provided I don't use fullscreen on a 4k monitor as I mentioned earlier. In windowed mode it works flawlessly for me.
