Accessing an external drive on the Pi4 from Finder on a Mac

Wed Aug 07, 2019 4:32 pm

I have successfully used the approach here: http://4dc5.com/2012/06/12/setting-up-v ... ac-access/
to share files and the Pi screen with several Pi 3's but when I do this with a Pi 4, I can see the Pi 4 in the Mac's Finder screen and I have the Connect and Share Screen buttons but connection is denied. I can ssh to the Pi4 via the Terminal on the Mac but that is not what I need. Grateful for any help.

I am new to this so please keep answers very simple.

Many thanks

Why don't you use VNC? Works like a charm with all Pi's that I've used so far.
You can also use it for sharing/exchanging files back&forth

What I want to do is to have read/write access to a drive on the pi4 USB3 port from Finder on the Mac. VNC just seems to give me control of the Pi4 from my Mac.

But the question remains - why does something that works for a Pi3B not work for a Pi4?

This is using Bonjour service. Should work on the Pi4 as well (if configured correctly)

Thanks I will have a look. I think I should have been bit more precise about what I want to do. I have several devices that I want to back up. I have written a Python program that I run on the Mac to do incremental backups to an external drive connected to the Mac. What I want to do is to run this program on the Mac but to back up to a drive connected to the USB3 port of the Pi4. To do that I need to be able to see that external drive in Finder on the Mac.

Odd that the process that works for a Pi3B does not work for a Pi4. Will someone be updating the process?

Thanks again.

Following the steps as described work fine for a Pi3B but not for a Pi4.
