Wherefore the Pi ?

Wed Dec 05, 2012 12:50 pm

I was just wondering on the choice of name
for the system.

Raspberry (nice logo) is a cool choice ( haven't seen this used before )
( which of course couldn't be Apple although
Blueberry or Strawberry wouldn't be out
of the question BUT of course Lemon would be
- In the past they also had I think an Hitachi Peach system )
and the Pi added on makes the name more distinctive.
( how about the Mango, Pawpaw or Apricot 1 ?
or alternatively the Passionfruit or MelonHead 1 ?
anyone for Fruit Salad ? ;O) ).

There are of course many legit uses for Lemons
( long tall cool drinks in summer, coctails and of course
lemon meringue pie and lemon butter ).
But not around cmos electronics please ( ZZZZAPP! ).

I'm glad they didn't use the name Lychee.
Just the smell of those things makes me gag/barph !

What I want to know is where Pi came from ?
Someone with a fascination for mathematics ?
i.e. Pi r2 ? Que ?

I must admit I am somewhat in awe at what has been
packed into the R Pi for the price.

It is not only an awesome little beastie,
it is cute ( Cutie Pi ? ) to boot and way cool.
It looks great as well. I have mine in a clear
plastic case from Multicomp.
I may also get another unit as a backup
and one of those groovy mulberry red cases
or a rainbow one from Adafruit.

Imagine a whole LAN of R Pi or how many you could stack
into your server farm racks. These babies take up so
little space.

Can someone tell me why the Pi was added on
at the end ? ( or is this ABOVE TOP SECRET
or simply another one of lifes' nebulous and
unanswerable mysteries ?).

cheers

Raspberry, because there was nostalgia about 1980s- home computers named after fruit (apricot, apple, etc)

Pi because Python is probably the preferred educational language.

Apparently.

I have a client that uses fruit names for hostnames.... Just set up a new VPS server for them and had to find an unused fruit name and Lychee was it. Never seen one in person so I have no idea what they smell like but it did seem to be an interesting fruit.

As for Raspberry Pi name... google is your friend...
TS: Where does the name Raspberry Pi come from?

Eben Upton: Raspberry is a reference to a fruit naming tradition in the old days of microcomputers. A lot of computer companies were named after fruit. There's Tangerine Computer Systems, Apricot Computers, and the old British company Acorn, which is a family of fruit.

Pi is because originally we were going to produce a computer that could only really run Python. So the Pi in there is for Python. Now you can run Python on the Raspberry Pi but the design we ended up going with is much more capable than the original we thought of, so it's kind of outlived its name a little bit.

Just in case I have anyone worried here,
no I haven't been smoking anything
( not today ).

Maybe we should all get together
eventually for an R Pi warming ?

Lychees have this strange extra sweet
perfume that for some reason
makes me want to
gag and upchuck every time ( yech ! ).

I could never eat those things.

My older brother has an aversion
to beetroot ( especially when cooked ).
I wonder if beetroot is somehow
related to fruits ? ( The Beetroot 1 system ! ).

I certainly didn't know that acorns were in any
way related to fruit ? ( weird )

Yeah you're right I was just looking for an excuse to diss sprouts. The Spheres Of The Devil as I call them.

Getting back onto Fozzy's topic though - as for racks and racks of ARM servers, there was a Lego Pi cluster somewhere on the News pages or Forum recently. So it's been done...

I LOVE the spheres of the devil. Quarter them, toss them in bacon grease and a bit of salt, roast in a single layer at a high temperature for 25 minutes. The insides go sweet and the outsides caramelise, thanks to our old friend Dr Maillard and his Reaction - best veg ever.

You guys are boiling them, aren't you?

And as for that cluster/supercomputer (really a neat little demonstration for teaching purposes of how a supercomputer works) - it's at http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/tag/supercomputer.

Well I think you're right, Mumsy used to boil the things to death. Enough to put a small geeky boy off Christmas. (And you probably already guessed I sanitised the name I normally use for them.)

Yep THAT was the link I was looking for - cluster of raspis running as a Lego Supercomputer. Not cost effective, but exceptionally cool.

I love sprouts. As Liz said, or you can boil 'al dente', and sprinkle cheese on top. Lovely. And I generally hate vegetables.

Yes, also eat them raw, as I eat most vegetables - you cook them and they become the spawn of the devil. Except sprouts of course. And cauliflower. Cauliflower chees (liek wot my ma makes) is the dogs dangles. Oh, and don't eat Dog Danglies, even in Korea..

And I don't eat mushrooms raw. That's madness right there.

I remember watching something on the news a while ago some dad couldn't get his kids to eat vegetables so he coated Brussels sprouts in chocolate and passed them off as sweets.
omg I nearly choked on my diet coke when I saw that.

I have always hated brussel sprouts.

Spheres of the devil ? They must have come out of his
armpits or other nether regions.

It would take a clever cook to find a way to
present these bitter little guys in a way that would make them
palatable to my taste.

Are they as hatefull as those flipping orrible carroway seeds
that you find your mother has secreted away amongst the
boiled cabbage ? Why do mothers do that ?
They make a perfectly good meal and then add something
you hate just for good measure i.e. if it tastes bad it must be good for you.

There is something else I really hate, those little green
pickled things ( not peas ) that look like tiny frogs
( I think they are nasturtion seeds or something, can't remember ).

Now, Devils on Horseback ( cooked prunes with bacon wrapped around them - Yummm ! ) there is an entirely different proposition.

It just goes to show the variation in taste/buds with everyone out there.

Tomorrow I will polish off the fried rice I made tonight
( a little oil, egg, onions, rice, prawns, soy sauce and some honey -
very edible ).

cheers and Razzle Dazzle

From little things BIG things grow ( mighty oaks or even razzle berries ).

And now we have Goji or Wolf Berries :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfberry

Good 4 you in so many ways.

The first six words at the top of this post come from a
Paul Kelly song ( he is kind of like Australias' Bob Dylan
[ street poet ] and sings, plays guitar and writes ).
Check him out on you tube. You too may like his stuff.

I just caught Rod Stewart doing a christmas show
on TV ( jazzy, bluesy pop stuff. "Santas' comin to town" etc..)
with a full string orchestra and a bunch of other jazz/rock
musos and a cool negro vocalist.
Not normally that into Rod but this show was great fun
( big audience danceing , clapping and singing along).
Rod does have a husky character voice and good pop
sensibility etc..

cheers

OK I may have stuffed up again back there ( just getting used to this NO Carriage Returns business - will get there ).

I just remembered what those nasty little green pickled things are
( the ones that kind of look like very small frogs ).

Capers ( hate those little guys ) and I thought they had something to do with
nasturtium seeds. Turns out there is a Nasturtium Caper plant which has a bit on it which looks like a caper ( I think they use them the same way ).
The capers I am talking about are the buds from the Caper plant.
