Cloning the RPi

Wed Dec 05, 2012 10:28 am

Hi,
Is the RPi open source hardware like the Beagleboard?
If not will it ever be?
Does there exist "All You Need to Create a RPi Clone" page somewhere like the one that exist for the [Beagleboard (http://www.cnx-software.com/2011/11/05/ ... one-clone/)?

I believe the schematics are available so you could go ahead and design/make one.

The main problem is availability of the SoC.

Hi,
If it is available, where is it available?
What do you mean by "SoC"?

SoC is System on a Chip, its the brains of the RasPi. The cpu, gpu and memory.

Outside of ordering a few tens of thousands you'll have a extremely hard time getting hold of them.

Actually, the SoC is just the CPU/GPU. The memory is a separate item, not purchased at the same time as the SoC - so you can order whatever size you want. (i.e. 128,256, or 512). But, and its a big but, its unlikely you would be able to purchase either the SoC or the memory in small (i.e. <10k) quantities.
