CHEAP 6+ inch screen

Thu Jul 25, 2019 7:57 am

I need a display for my project with the following requirements
  • Runs off of up to 36V DC
  • Is 6 to 10 inches
  • Display only, not touch
  • Is efficient as it will run on a battery
  • Ridiculously cheap ($10-$20)
Everything I find on ebay and aliexpress is upward of $40 without shipping, any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Small TV , car reversing monitor, Car DVD player screen etc.
These have composite video input not HDMI.

Yep - you're in the realm of cheap composite car reversing monitor displays at that price point and screen size.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Monito ... way&sr=8-4 is an example from UK Amazon.

You can get very low cost SPI TFT displays - but they are much smaller than 6" and require some additional config and drivers.

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I found a solution, at least theoretically. I'm posting for any future cheap bastards like me.

I found a 7" tablet with a damaged battery for as low as $4 on an ebay-like website in my area. The good thing is that it comes with the battery so I'll be able to salvage its circuit and make it run off of my main power source. Then I will use a VNC app to connect it to the PI. Since my PI is set up as an access point the tablet will connect to it (Super lucky! But it could also work if they're in the same network).

So far so good, I've ordered it and will post back if it doesn't work out.

you still have to attach the screen to the RPi so home- that will cost more

No, the idea is to run the android device and connect to the Pi through a VNC server, there are a bunch of free apps for it. It seems a little overkill as a tablet would use up ~10W of power but I'm not too worried about this since it's not really going to be doing much computing work, most of it will go to powering the screen and is not so far from what a screen alone would consume anyway.
