Implementing a video/audio intercom

I would like to implement a real time bi-directional intercom with simultaneous audio and video using Raspberry Pi Zero's, RaspberryPi cameras and suitable colour displays, and interconnected via an Ethernet cable. Before I start spending money on the necessary hardware and time on the required coding, does anyone know if this is even possible? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Certainly possible though I would suggest ZW's to save the network cabling. Obviously each base unit would require a camera/monitor and sound card (Pi's don't have a microphone input) but the logistics is feasible. That $5/$10 computer is going to cost you a lot more though.

I did R&D on videoconferencing systems almost 50 years ago and even back then we would say "The video is the easy part, it is the audio that is difficult."
