Pi won't boot after rpi-update

Sun Jul 21, 2019 11:31 am

Hi,

I have a webserver with Raspbian Stretch running on my Raspberry Pi 3.
Yesterday I ran sudo rpi-update. At a certain point my SSH console disconnected and ever since my Raspberry Pi won't boot anymore.

How can I fix this? I need some of the files on my disk.

I already tried flashing a new image of the raspbian_latest on another SD-card and copying over the files in the boot partition, without success...

Why did you run rpi-update which installs testing kernel / firmware ?

Well to upgrade my firmware to the latest version?
Or is that a strange thing to do on a test environment...
Can you now please answer my question instead of asking other questions and referring to the documentation?

Well if you're testing you should not be surprised if things break.

If you read the link provided there is a paragraph about rolling back to a working configuration.

Yes I read that. Too bad you can't execute bash commands when the system doesn't boot huh?

Yeah. That smells bad.
/boot has the firmware and kernel, rpi-update messed with that and you should bet able to extract ok files from a release
/lib/*, esp. /lib/modules on the second partition gets updated with the kernel. Try to rollback this directory to the released version.

I think that should be it. Good luck...

Well yeah, I know It's Raspbian Stretch. I'll try flashing this version and copying this over.
We'll see if this works... Thanks for the useful answer.

Luckily you guys made the kernel/boot partition available for windows explorer :)

Hum. Debatable advantage if you ask me...
Warning: you must replace /lib on rootfs, the ext4 partition. Use a linux machine or a VM.

So a required setup then?

Exactly.

For others reading rpi-update is at best in the beta stage, in some cases I would classify it as at the alpha stage. do not use it unless you really need the fixes and never on a live system.

It is sometimes necessary to ask questions in order to understand the situation if such infirnation has been neglected by the Opening Poster.

Nobody here can mind read, so at best must either make an educated guess, or ask the obvious.

My science teacher used to ask us questions all the time when we answered unsatisfactorily. For example, if he asked how many electrons are in a copper atom, and received a reply of 29, he'd ask "29 what?"
