Custom partition layout

Thu Jul 18, 2019 10:57 am

Is it recommended to manually create a partition layout on the sd card?
I created a fat32 and two ext4 partitions and copied everything from the downloaded image (raspian) file at file system level.
I noticed that the first partition of the raspian image starts at position 8192. Does the preceeding free space contain essential data like a bootloader that I missed?

No. It is empty. You can check it yourself by running

Code: Select all

dd if=yourraspbian.img bs=512 count=8191 skip=1 | od
It'll show a row of 0's and then a * to say it is repeated.

Partition alignment so it fits the underlying flash memory erase blocks. The RPi firmware will work fine without alignment but you'll be generating more writes when it straddles across two erase blocks.
