Download Problems

Thu Jul 18, 2019 1:09 am

Since the Buster release it has proved near impossible to download.

Generally, after wasting some time re-loading stuff each time it fails with:-

Code: Select all

Get:7 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Contents (deb) [39.7 MB]
Ign:7 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Contents (deb)
Err:7 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Contents (deb)
  Undetermined Error [IP: 93.93.128.193 80]
I had expected this would improve after the initial peak, but still in evidence.

Why is this download from raspbian.raspberrypi.org?
Is there an alternative/mirror.

The size of the index downloads is small, but very slow.
Are there any other options?

I can't even install Recommended Software, because the Pi insists on updating.

Not quite true.

I have never had a problem downloading from raspberrypi.org. Sometimes it might be a bit slow.

If you feel the need for speed what is wrong with the torrent?

I had trouble downloading Buster even a week after it was released. Kept aborting after a few MB.
I then tried torrent DL and that worked first time.

I believe the first update/upgrade is now close to 200MB.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Buster w/ Desktop OS.

I am not concerned about speed and don't mind the wait but Recommended Software hangs I can't even look at the list!

PS How do you use a torrent for apt update or Recommended Software?

Before running Recommended Software for the first time you need to sudo apt update and answer Y to the prompt.
After that the update preformed by Recommended Software should work.
If that is not your problem then your OS is corrupt and I would suggest to DL and install again.

The torrents suggestion is in response to your OP where you mentioned having trouble downloading the OS image. Torrents of course can not be used to update or R S.

I never had the slightest problem, even on day one.
Downloaded Lite several times and "Full with recommended software" once.

I have run Recommended Software, but it seems to check for updates again.

I never mentioned having trouble downloading the OS image, but downloading the updates.
There are many other mentions of

Code: Select all

Err:7 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster/main armhf Contents (deb)
  Undetermined Error [IP: 93.93.128.193 80]
on this site and elsewhere, so there is a problem, even if it does not affect everyone and I am asking if there is any way to avoid this. These are quite small downloads.
