Booting Pi4 from a Pi3B+ install

Wed Jul 17, 2019 3:08 am

My Pi3b+ is dead, so I was wondering if I buy a Pi4 and put the Pi3b+ SD card in will it boot and work with the already installed Raspbian stretch os or do I have to start fresh?

Unfortunately, any Raspbian before Buster isn't made to run on the Pi 4.

If your Pi 3B+ had been running Buster, you could just pop it in to a 4 and it would work.

As things are, you can either back up your Stretch card and overwrite with Buster, or install Buster on some other card and then copy your files from the Stretch card using anything that reads the ext4 filesystem.
RPi 4B w/ Buster in a toasty little official case, and an RPi 3B w/ Stretch.

I would suggest starting with a fresh install and a fresh SD card. Keep the older one and mount it as an external drive on the new Pi 4B using a USB card reader for coping over any old work.
