New RPI 4 running Debian buster - hardly anything works

Tue Jul 16, 2019 1:10 pm

Hi (2nd post)

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ cat /etc/issue
Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 \n \l

[email protected]:~ $ cat /etc/debian_version
10.0
[email protected]:~ $
[email protected]:~ $ cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)"
NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux"
VERSION_ID="10"
VERSION="10 (buster)"
VERSION_CODENAME=buster
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian

I want to use it for 3D cad.

Every program I have thus tried (but work fine under say Ubuntu 18 on X86) all crash
Programs tried
Freecad
OpenScad
Cura

Is there some magic I need to employ or a different distribution, or can recommend a 3D program and slicer that works under Debian 10

A raspberry Pi is not x86/x64 archeitecture. Comparing it to ubuntu x86 won't really show anything due to some programs not being compiled/available for the Pi.
1 * Raspberry Pi Zero W, 1 * Raspberry Pi 2, 1 * Raspberry Pi 3 1 * Raspberry Pi 3B + :mrgreen:

It is Raspbian Buster, which is a fork of Debian Buster ARMHF...

......x86 and ARM are differing CPU Architecture.

Considering Debian Buster ARMHF was only very recently released, it may take time to iron out every foible,.

Freecad seemed to have some unmet dependencies, Freecad simply isn't in the rpos' Cura install but crashed on startup. I suspect all of these are simply down to not working with some Buster changes. The Cura developers will need to fix the Cura problem, as for Freecad, I'll pass that on to the package guys here but I suspect that is again down to the developers.

Looks like I was a bit out of date in my updates. Now installs, but dies when trying to create a new object, something to do with GL. Will read that thread.

Thanks for the mostly helpful and the one unhelpful reply.

Is there another Distro I could try?

The hardware (RPi4) was released June 24 and came with a Raspbian based on pre-release Buster which was officially released July 6 so we are now 10 days into that cycle. There have been significant changes to graphics hardware in the Pi4, and I believe also graphics-related architecture in Buster. If there is already a better alternative distribution I am not aware of it. AFAIK, Raspbian has always been the best supported distro for the Pi.

It's not the distro, but I suspect something Freecad is doing to initialise the GL system. We should now be MESA/DRM compliant with the FKMS graphics driver, but there possibly a fault in there somewhere, BUT other standard GL stuff works OK. Would be worth reporting the issue herever Freecad do their development, they would have a better chance of knowing what the problem is.

I believe the FreeCAD bug tracker is here: https://www.freecadweb.org/tracker/my_view_page.php
see also: https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5236 for tips on where additional diagnostic information appears in Report View, Python Console windows and log files.

I also notice this:
