It would be well worth the money picking up books on bash, and sed & awk. I also use ffmpeg, sox, and imagemagick for multimedia stuff often.

The first thing that I install is florence or matchbox-keyboard.
That should be onboard by default since you else have no chance to get forward without a keyboard.

ntfs-3g to write to ntsf drives
cups for printing
sane for scanners, then xsane and simplescan
the print.pdf driver
kmymoney for personal accounting
gnome disk utilities (along with gparted that has been mentioned already)
clamtk antivirus
grsync (graphical rsync utility)
cheese photocapture for your usb camera

and a bunch of others, but already mentioned.

Kind of amazing what you can do with these suckers.

Tools to install:
  • raspiraw for high framerate video capturing (up to 750fps/1007fps for v1/v2 camera)
  • raspi2png (takes screenshots on Rasbian console including HDMI overlays like from raspistill/raspivid)
  • u4vl (low latency access Raspberry camera or desktop (console as well as X11) remotely in browser)
I forgot to mention omxiv, GPU accelerated image viewer for the Raspberry Pi (I use it for console):

GPU accelerated video player (I use it for console) omplayer is part of Raspberry Pi Os:

Or should I say, apps? :P
