Wifi Aware

Fri May 24, 2019 5:32 pm

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Wifi Aware ? (See this https://www.wi-fi.org/discover-wi-fi/wi-fi-aware)

Wifi aware allows peer to peer connectivity between devices, without the need for an AP and, more importantly, without any user intervention to setup the networking. I think it is a great solution to help the initial setup of an IoT. I understand that there may be other solutions but this one appears to be the one with the least friction.

Anyway, it is running on Raspberry Pi? Or is there a project to get it ?

Nope because the hardware needs to be "certified" and the software never made it beyond android. It's a poor standard with even poorer uptake.

The 8266 networking library allows you to set up WiFi without hardcoding anything. It can turn the chip into an AP and you enter the WiFi details.
Balina have a Pi program (on Github so it’s FOSS) that does the same.

The whole ‘open network - connect to anything’ gives me the shakes
Need Pi spray - these things are breeding in my house...
