Nexdock 2 - another shot

A new version of the Nexdock is launched on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ne ... /nexdock-2

A Nexdock is basically a terminal in laptop format. To turn it into a working computer you connect a smartphone, or a Pi, to it.

Nexdock 1 was discussed on this forum in 2016: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=136574&hilit=nexdock

Back then I ordered one, and after much delay I got it, but it never worked properly and I didn't bother to send it back to Hong Kong for repair.

I hope this one works better, I backed it.

I have the original NexDock here, and its been fine,
seems they have addressed the main drawback of that:
bluetooth keyboard&trackpad (which aren't the best and can't be used pre-boot)

The new one connects the keybaord and trackpad by USB

Won't be backing this time.
Whilst I still use mine Nexdock 1 because it is more convenient that dragging round a monitor, I have to carry a USB mouse to get the thing working.
Got charged import tax and ended up having to fit a replacement PCB.

At least they aren't on Indiegogo this time.

Problem I have is that I could buy a couple of second hand Lenovo 120S computers, two Pi zeros, a couple of cases and the USB cables to connect them for the price of one of these.

Though poor at running Windows the laptop runs Linux great...

I still see the need for a mobile Pi, so that is why I ordered the new NexDock.
There are other possibilities to create a laptop Pi, but this seems a pretty good deal to me.

The first goal of $50,000 has been reached.
Good to know: on top of the price comes $30 shipping cost (to the Netherlands, other countries may be different).
And on top of that expect import taxes and duties (at least VAT) to be paid to the delivery service.

I think the funding campaign is a success: $422,000 with 6 days to go, a lot quicker than the Nexdock 1 campaign.
Just hope the manufacturing campaign will go equally well.

And that their factory doesn't have a fire.. and that they actually test them before they are sent out...

Indeed.

Nexdock 2 is going to happen. 2166 backers raised $496,689 on Kickstarter in 30 days.
In fact the minimum goal of $50,000 was reached within one day, so it was never really a question.
The $500,000 stretch limit was not reached, however Nexdock 2 will come with a backlit keyboard anyway.

So the funding campaign has been very successful, now let's see if the production process can match that success. The planned shipping date is September 2019.

My new Pi year started with the delivery of the new Nexdock 2.
I backed the Kickstarter campaign for it in March 2019, and on Thursday I collected the Nexdock at the pick-up point. :D

Most important thing: it works! In fact, I am using it right now to write this post on a Pi 3B. It worked right out of the box with the Pi. the keyboard is good and the touchpad works too. I prefer a mouse over a touchpad, so I appreciate the function key to switch off the touchpad very easily.
So the first impression is very good. I will see if I can add a picture to this post and post other findings later.
