rainbow screen troble

Thu Mar 07, 2019 4:04 am

I have a nice custom image at bootup, but want the rainbow screen to go away...using latest stretch & rpi3.

I found these steps & repeated them EXACTLY & re-tried them 3 times...but during each boot the rainbow square (4 colors) keeps showing up...are these invalid edits? The display is a LCD plugged into the HDMI jack. I tried putting the suggestion at the bottom, then tried top of the config file, but still no luck.

Steps
1. Remove Rainbow Screen
1-1. Open “/boot/config.txt”.

sudo nano /boot/config.txt

Then add below at the end of the file.
# Disable rainbow image at boot
disable_splash=1

If you mean the initial big colored square, that part of the VC4 boot process and there is nothing you can do about it.

You're not quoting official documentation, so it could be any old twaddle.

It is in the official docs at the bottom of https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... xt/boot.md, but I'm not in the office to confirm whether that functionality is still valid. I'd be surprised if it had been dropped though.

Actually, disable_splash=1 in config.txt should work. Try it for yourself.

Not really sure why that doesn't work for you. It works fine for me. Must be something about your custom image? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just double checked it with the latest Raspbian (since I normally don't use that setting), and it still works as expected.

No GPU test (rainbow screen) with:
disable_splash=1

Yes GPU test (rainbow screen) with either:
#disable_splash=1
disable_splash=0

Are you using NOOBS? I thought I saw something about it not working with noobs...but not sure if/how that would make any difference. I'm using the latest NOOBS setup.

No, I don't use NOOBS. Why do you?

In my opinion, NOOBS causes more problems than it solves. I just use the Raspbian images (and the Etcher image writing utility). It's easier than NOOBS, and far less problematic.
