Is my project legal/fair?

Hi,
My client wants me to design a system for him. He needs few devices to act as electronic locks in buildings around the country and he wants ability to control those devices through the internet. Behind doors closed by those locks are services or other goods that his clients pay for. After they send for example paypal payment, the lock opens. He's going to buy boards and other necessary components, my only job is to write a program. Is it legal and fair to use raspberries in this devices? I want to make sure before I send an answer to my client. He's not going to sell those devices or make money directly on them. He will get paid only for things behind the door.

You can use them for anything you choose. You have bought them, they are yours.

What you couldn't do is use the term "doors secured by Raspberry Pi" without permission as I think the name is trademarked.

Perhaps "powered by Raspberry Pi" would be acceptable.

Actually, spoke to Gordon last night, and he is of the opinion that the vast majority of people will now see no problems, and he expects to be able to improve the USB again to reduce the impact on users by a significant factor, which should make it even better. So, please don't take the relatively few remaining reports of USB issues as indicative of the whole situation. It comes down to 'try your USB hardware on the board' - and given it's an industrial project, $35 to try it is not a huge outlay. In fact, probably the cehapest HW test you'll ever find!

Hi James. I'm myself (indirectly) concerned with process control in HVAC business. Usually money not spent is easily eaten up by problems. I wouldn't recommend consumer PC hardware either.

Fair enough! I think the use or not of a Raspi depends solely on the requirements - I'm sure it will be possible to use in certain 'industrial' applications, and I'm equally sure it should'nt be used in other ones! I for one won't be using it as a flight computer.
