run win3.1 dos legacy software - not games

Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:14 pm

Hi,
I'm searching for a micro platform that I can use to run Win3.1 DOS legacy business software.
Interested to hear from anyone who has any advice or experience.
I understand that Raspberry Pi doesn't have the right processor for running windows - but I have to start somewhere, can anyone recommend another micro platform that is compatible with Win3.1 DOS.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
David

Why would you expect responders on this forum to recommend a competitor's product ?

Regards your issue, look at DOSBOX...

When Win 3.1 was in use, games were tougher on PCs than business software. I'll second the recommendation to look at DOSbox. I ran games from that era on a 256MB Pi Model B pretty well, and a Pi3B+ is easily 10 times faster than a Model B...not to mention having 4 times the RAM.

The actual advice, however is, update your software to run on a reasonably current system.

Although the Raspberry Pi is the wrong processor architecture to run Windows 3.1 directly, you can use QEMU or Dosbox to run Windows 3.1 on the Raspberry Pi through emulation. Various people have done this successfully. An example is https://www.howtogeek.com/230359/how-to ... bit-games/

I briefly tried dBaseIII+/Clipper and Word for DOS under DOSBOX.

Works much better than under recent versions of Windows.
