Mabe that's unnecessary:

(I feel stupid for not realising that David Braben was incolved in creating the Pi in the first place!)
Here's an interview with him:

And a picture to make you feel nostalgic:

Exactly what
does one "load" a Commander with in Elite? Vodka? Scotch? Rum? Rot-gut? The most important question of course is "shaken, not stirred"?

At least @Jim Manley you did not mention the sexual references also. LOL

The link to the BBC micro of the eighties is tenuous at best, it probably doesn't go as far as ensuring revamped old games for the beeb micro have a Pi version.....
OK, Acorn later went on to make the ARM processor, it's still tenuous......

I know, annoying isn't it?
People dont seem to be posting on that though so Im posting here.
Looks like the target will be smashed so hopefully the extra funds and interest will be reflected in the quality of the game.
16 months to wait though...

The link back to the BBC Micro is along the lines of the proposed use in Education, which is what the BBC Micro was for. And the naming - Model A and Model B is a nod in that direction.

AKA "tenuous"
The Model B was the default option for the Beeb as well..... Very few bought the "A"

So, along the lines of Dark Orbit then?

Don't know - never played 'Dark Orbit' - is that influenced by the original Elite?
I think it's like the original Elite with better graphics (cf oolite) multi player capability and the ability to enter planet atmospheres and fly over their populated surfaces.
I'm excited by the heritage of the title and expertise of Mr. Braben as he seems dedicated to teasing out performance.

There is Oolite in the repository. How to run it? I have a error report when I run it on RPI -
/usr/lib/GNUstep/Applications/oolite.app/oolite: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/GNUstep/Applications/oolite.app/oolite: undefined symbol: main

You can run Arc Elite - one of the best versions of the original, quite smoothly on the Pi if you run it on the ArcEm emulator whilst running RISC OS - I've done a write up of this on my blog -
http://kimondo.co.uk/elite-making-a-gam ... e-box-art/ - you're playing in widescreen although there are some settings in ArcEm to address this - which is still being updated regularly.
I love this game so much - can't wait for the updated version (backed it as soon as I read the news!)

For some reason, I could not follow your link, but it is viewable from the front of your main site.
http://kimondo.co.uk/
Would also be good if someone could figure out how to get Oolite running also

Kimondo, i cannot get your version of arcem to run. I've followed your blog instructions, but double clicking on !ArcEm in riscos just runs StrongED and a text document opens up.

I have failed to get this to work with the same problem. StrongED comes up and then I have no idea what to do next.
I used a USB stick which had a FAT32 file system on it, any suggestions? I have a feeling it's because I don't know what to do. I can see the properties of the !ArchEm application, and get its help to come up - I just have zero idea what I am doing

Me neither! I downloaded all the requisite stuff from the individual links too, just to see of that would work, but I get the same result.
Help!

I have done some more work to this and I have found that the zip file he has posted is basically mangled. Two things though, don't unzip the file using windows or linux. Use Risc OS itself to unzip the file. After you do that though you'll see the file types have been lost, most of them coming out as "data". You'll then get an error saying "An application that loads a file of this type has not been found by the Filer. Open a directory display containing the required application and try again" when you try to open !ArchEm. So the zip file he's put up on his site must have been made using either windows or linux and not Risc OS itself.

I got Elite running (hint - ignore kinmodo's file and install the files from source one-by-one). First day using RISC os in 20 years!
Keys don't seem to work though - only mouse control - and seems to run a bit fast. Any ideas?

I thought it would have hit its target by now, I know there is still quite a long way to go, but maybe there is not enough demand for a modern Elite after all :/
