I am at a total loss as to understand the Inland Revenue logic with regard to import duty. How would any British company build product here and pay a tax levy for privilege of doing so.

Here's hoping that Raspi can convince the relevant government departments of the incongruity of the current system and that it will be finally financially viable to have a British produced P.C. for a British charity

Have you noticed how the forum member numbers have been going up in the last few days - a couple of hundred more today.  Don't think you need to worry about the level of interest...  Keep those production lines rolling!

I know it woud be far too expensive (and difficult to actually carry out), but I would like to buy a batch of Raspberry Pi's, Model A's would do, and find all those morons on /. who whined about "vaporware" and such like. I would then insert the aforesaid Pi where the sun does not shine.

With extreme prejudice.

I'd probably use a coalhammer to make sure it fitted.

*deep breath*

Ha! Evidence at last that it"s a sticker selling scam!!!! It would be a green button to start!

Shame it"s not practical to get done in UK but notice lack of criticism only a "typical" response. Did you look at alternatives in Europe (thinking Ireland could do with the cash), purely for the environmental impact of transport – if lots cheaper in the East stay there.

I believe from what I"ve read in the last 10 minutes or so that it was an attempt to shore up UK component manufacture, but what with barn doors and bolted horses etc. it"s now turned round to bite us

At any rate I feel a little happier in the belief that there was some sort if reasoning, even if it was hopelessly short-sighted reasoning.

it is a shame you have ended up outsourcing, perhaps offering a more expensive homemade version will pique the interest of the environmentally conscious?

so 3-4 weeks from 3-4 days ago means 17-25 days on the clock.... start watching the store from the 22nd onward, in case they pull a fast one.

congratulations. you are nearly there btw ebay is going nuts now....

Happy to know that the production is launched.

Nevertheless, I'm sorry to play the killjoy one more time but, shouldn't have these costs / taxes problems taken into account *before* determining the price ???

We all know that it's nearly always easier/quicker/less expensive to produce in far east (and we all know why !) but when ,say ... 6 mounth ago, you decided that a given componant was essential to your device, you added its price to the rest to make an estimation of the global price, right ?

Why didn't you do the same for manufacturing : you *wanted* an U.K. production that cost X, add X to the final cost ! I thought you had a PCB professional in your team, wasn't he aware of all these things ?

I guess it all comes down to priorities. Yes they could have manufactured it in the UK and they could very well have decided to charge more for the device, but since their primary goal, as I understand it, is to produce something that is affordable to children, educational markets and the 3rd world, keeping the cost down unfortunately trumps UK manufacturing.

Also, Woot! Congratulations on getting the production line going! I shall sit over the computer and the store like a hyena looks over its next meal when it hasn't eaten in a few days.

Congratulations! Seems like a reluctant but sound decision to offshore the manufacturing. Once the clones started shipping, it would have been tough to justify paying a premium for purchasing locally anyway.  Shipping sooner is really important so that more developers can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the FAQs?

Let the guys learn by trial & error.

They are doing a great job bringing this product to market and will fall into, and climb out of the pits on the way.

Shipping time from the far east was (is?) 28 days port to port.

Air freight is much faster but more costly – lucky the R-Pi is not bulky or heavy!

Keep up the good work.

By the way, you can expect the Chinese to be copying your product as we type!
