Wow, sweet 64

It's not Raspbian, it's Debian. At https://people.debian.org/~stapelberg/ is https://people.debian.org/~stapelberg/r ... 018-01-08/ which is a Debian Buster 64 bit arm64/aarch64 image. I downloaded it a couple days ago and wrote it to an SD. It hasn't always been simple figuring out what to do next, but I like it. I first noticed a speedup of Pooler's cpuminer running a Gentoo 64 bit image. Now I'm running cpuminer-multi on 1 thread and it went from about 3.15 kH/s (32 bit) to 4.13 - 4.25 kH/s (64 bit). It comes with Firefox ESR 52.7.3 and Gimp 2.8 (at least once you do an update and upgrade). It's been pretty stable, except by default there's no swap set up so I've crashed it a couple times running Gimp and Firefox together. I've used Debian before on i386/586 machines. It works smoothly, Facebook is a little sluggish. I checked one of their pages a week or two ago and it was 16 megabytes, for 1 page.

The /etc/apt/sources.list looks like:

I don't like having the unstable branch in there but something broke when I commented it out so I put it back. I'm in LXDE, I think I had to add that, but it seems to work fine. Uname -a looks like

And I was worried about spending all this time without a way to back it up, so I built Piclone from source and made an arm64 deb while I was at it.

Out of the image it's not set up real well for development so I had to figure out what packages I needed to install. By the time I'd built cpuminer-multi https://github.com/tpruvot/cpuminer-mul ... /linux.zip and piclone it's shaping up nicely. There'll probably be more I need to install, I intend to try building Gimp 2.10 next. The Gentoo I tried had Gimp 1.9, which finally breaks past the 8/24 bit color barrier. The RAW files from my Nikon D5200 are 14/42 bit, I always spend a bunch of time in ufraw before I squeeze it through the 8/24 bit funnel.

Here's some Massachusetts Forsythia mostly cropped out to show 2 rxvt windows. The left one is local, the right one is an ssh session to a 32 bit Pi, both running cpuminer-multi. Notice the kH/s difference.

Got it done. Don't build Gimp with GCC 7, you'll have to redo it. And the first compile took 2 hours, then I used -j 2 on make the second time and it was only 1.5 hours. Anyway it's a known problem: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=213672 I used GCC 8.

174 debs installed to meet dependencies and latter generation dependencies.

Uptime is 23:22, pushing it hard, doesn't break.

One scary thing though is that there's no thermal management stuff like what's built into Raspbian Don't know about camera and bluetooth yet, don't use those much.

Hi ab1jx,

By coincidence, I'm working on an ebuild of cpuminer-multi for the gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image at the moment, because of a user request.

As such, would you mind posting some brief output from ./cpuminer --benchmark (with whatever --algo you are most comfortable with) so I can compare with the results here, once I have this stable? Many thanks!

PS any specific build flags you used (different from those on the cpuminer-multi github page) would also be very helpful.

Yes, I tried your Gentoo image, I might have switched to Gentoo but then I looked around and found a Debian one. I thought it worked fine but the change in terminology ("portage" etc.) wasn't worth it. I've been using Debian for about 10 years.

OK, first off I only run one thread of this because AFAIK there's no thermal checking that works. I386 stuff like sensorsd will probably need adapting or replacing.

By my config.log I ran configure with:
./configure --disable-assembly CFLAGS=-Ofast -march=native --with-crypto --with-curl
Mostly from the advice on the page I think, under pi64. I did the debian apt-get line with all the packages because it doesn't hurt anything, I had most of them.

The disable-assembly I assume is because nobody's written any, at least for 64 bit. The downside of course is that it's considerably slower than Pooler's original cpuminer. That, with 1 thread, does about 0.95 kH/s scrypt on a Pi in 32 bit mode, or on an Android phone (Multiminer app, runs Pooler's minerd). But x11 is an algorithm there aren't any ASICs for so CPU and GPU mining still has a chance. I have small ASICs for scrypt and sha256.

Just for fun, I built cpuminer-2.4.5 (the original) under 64 bit Debian. It also disables its assembly language and runs at about half speed. This is with scrypt as the algorithm.

many thanks for posting the benchmarks and build details, they were really useful.

So, I've now created an initial cut of the cpuminer-multi ebuild (commit, based on the existing cpuminer-opt ebuild) and tested it on an RPi3B+ using the gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image. The system is in a Flirc case but isn't overclocked etc. Using the on-demand CPU governor.

I temporarily ran the system headless for these benchmarks (brief instructions for which are here). There's a slight drop in performance if running the benchmarks with the graphical desktop active (10% or so).

CFLAGS used were -march=armv8-a+crc -mtune=cortex-a53 -Ofast -pipe. Otherwise the configuration etc. was pretty much the same as yours, as you can see from the ebuild.

There's a binary package for this as well now, so if you'd like to try it out, simply download the gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image, open a terminal, then:

PS given that your hashrates are around half of mine, I wonder if your Debian image has the (default) 'powersave' CPU governor running, rather than 'performance' or 'ondemand'?

Edit: I have just recompiled this under gcc-7.3.0-r1 (rather than the 'stable' default gcc-6.4.0-r1) and pushed the resulting package to the binhost. The benchmarks show a slight improvement wrt the numbers listed above in this post (around 5-10%, presumably due to better arm64 optimization by the compiler). If you emerge as described above, this newer version is now the one which will be installed.

Well, that brings up a big can of worms. I broke my Gentoo by removing PAM, Apparmor, Selinux. It refused to boot after that, I forget what the messages were. I did it in a legitimate manner as far as I know by using emerge or whatever to uninstall, but nothing pieced together what was left so it would boot.

Here in this Debian:

So my next step was to try OpenBSD's Pi image because they don't use any of that junk. A panel with patch cables will always be more versatile than a panel with wired switches just because whoever wires the switches can't predict every possible use of them. Most of this PAM/Apparmor/Selinux infestation seems to be new with Stretch. I don't like it to the point of being ready to switch to something that doesn't have it if I can't remove it. This is at least the2nd time I've had a problem with it being there.

This is a single user machine that nobody else touches, behind NAT, 1000 feet from any neighbor. I don't want that stuff in there. Grrr.

I've seen this running at 1000 or 1200 MHZ though, with Raspbian. Right now this LXDE CPU freq monitor isn't working, but I haven't rebooted since I enabled it.

The gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit image does not ship with apparmor or selinux installed by default (although it does have pam). The list of installed packages (with versions) may be reviewed here.

Also, if you're using this image and would like to completely purge the graphical desktop and apps (libreoffice etc) to run a headless server, please see my instructions on the project's wiki here.

To turn on the ondemand governor, you could do (as root) something like:

Oh, oops, like /proc. OpenBSD doesn't have any of those, not quite used to them.

Rebooting didn't make LXDE's CPU Freq Frontend work, I'm not sure what the CPU's doing. The methods for checking that under Raspbian mostly don't work here. But looking seriously at https://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv ... berry-pi-3. I'm expecting another blank SD in a day or two.

If you reboot, any changes you made via e.g. echo "ondemand" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor will be lost, unless you put them in a startup script or similar.
Just run the commands given, as root, and then try running your benchmarks again (without rebooting). If the governor is the issue, you'll see an immediate improvement.
