Hi,
we`re doing some raspi- and arduino-things at school. The children are asking for some games in between and I was thinking of simple multiplayer-games for a LAN-environment - no internet. Since all games installed with raspian are single player I ask you if you know easy games suitable for children of 10 years which can be played in a LAN ? We have Pi1- and alike computers - so simple graphics is required. they're not interested in minecraft or minetest
Is there a multiplayer car race like super mario and things like that?
How about
Netrek? This is a team based game using line graphics that has been optimised both for interesting game play and minimal hardware requirements--it was originally designed to run on Sun workstations much slower than the Pi in university computing labs and was played by teams of computer science students late at night. There is strategy involved as well as a significant amount of reflex based skill.
There is also a bit of a learning curve. For example, of you give a group of children a basket ball and set up the baskets, their strategy and style of play will be much different than an experienced team. It is the same with Netrek, which surprisingly requires a similar amount of cooperation and coordination between players on a team to play well. Still, I would think 10 year olds would catch on easily enough, especially if they thought it was going to be fun.
It will look quite retro, but in my opinion compared to modern network games, the team interaction aspects of Netrek are unsurpassed. And it really is great fun once you have enough players to populate the teams.
