RPi Problem

Sat Oct 27, 2012 12:03 am

(note: if this is a double post, then probably I have missed something after posting my first one.)

Hello guys! :D I'm new to the forums and this is my first post. Unfortunately I am currently having trouble with my RPi and could use some of your help.

I just got my Raspberry Pi yesterday after ordering it from element14 the day before. When I start up the computer, I just get a barrage of text coming from the linux console printing out errors of whatever reason (sorry but I can't read most of them since they just keep on flooding my screen) D: and just stops after the flood saying that one of the features respawns too fast and had to be disabled for 5 minutes.

I believe that the error has something to do with the fact that I am using a Samsung Galaxy Mini charger that has the following attributes:

MODEL: ETA0U10HBE
Input: 100-240V (not really an issue I guess)
50-60Hz 0.15A
OUTPUT: 5.0V = 0.7A (Quick start page suggests that 5v and 0.7a should be enough.)

shouldn't 0.7A be enough for my RPi or do I need to find and buy a proper power supply?
Micro USB power supply – make sure you use a good quality one, capable of providing at least 700mA at 5V. Do not attempt to power your Raspberry Pi by plugging it into a computer or a hub.
More information:
Raspberry Pi Model B (with the recent 512mb RAM upgrade)
2gb Transcend MicroSD with Raspbian installed; Class # unknown, but probably generic.
RCA Video plugged to TV

I think that's it because nothing else is plugged in at the moment except the boot card and the power supply/phone charger.
Another issue that I may be having is that since I am using a 2gb MicroSD instead of a Class 4 MicroSD there probably be some files that have not been installed correctly when I used Win32DiskImager for windows since it is 2gb instead of 4 (maybe insufficient space?). And when I looked at the total file size after formatting my SD with win32 disk imager, the capacity and size says something like "20.9mb / 55.9". I've reformatted the MicroSD several times in FAT32 as well as reinstalling the image file that I torrented from this site located in the Downloads page.

So could somebody please tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you for your time reading this bulk of text and hopefully that your answers would help me in correcting some of the issues that I am having.

P.S. The reason why I am using a phone charger instead of a proper one is because I was thinking that it would properly power my RPi since it meets most of the requriements (0.7A and 5v output) suggested from the "Quick Start" guide and also I thought that this should be sufficient for my personal use because I do not need to spend some more $$$.

Sorry if you were unable to understand some of the sentences I have written. English isn't my native language. But if you have any questions regarding how I word my sentences or simply can't understand, I will do my best to correct those mistakes.

I got exactly the same problem here. Received my raspberry pi (512Mb RAM) from element14 a week ago, use an Apple usb power adapter (can deliver 1A current) and got the "... authentication failure... respawns too fast and had to be disabled for 5 minutes" message during boot up.
Really appreciate any help from the RasPi experts here to help us to continue our RasPi journey!!!

1) What type of keyboard are you using? Sounds like you might be getting feedback from the keyboard which causing the the authentication errors??

2) You really should be using a 4GB SDcard. The image is 2GB, but as soon as you do an update you will most likely run out of room. Class doesn't mean much, typically a Class 4 will be good enough and Class 10 may not be usable to its potential anyway.

3) After you load the image on the SDCard, in Windows you will ONLY see the FAT partition. The Linux partition will not show. This is normal.

4) Recommend using a 1amp 5v power supply. Especially if you plan on plugging anything into the USB ports.

Yes phone chargers do seem to cause issues, I bought a generic 5V 1A Power Supply for under a fiver on ebay and works well on both my Pi and Rikomagic MK802 II.

Regards SD Cards 4GB is minimum, depending on Distro use GParted to extend partition size to use all of the cards size.

I use Class 4,6 and 10 all without issues as well as MiniSD Cards in an Adaptor.

I'm using the stock keyboard that comes with eMachines prebuilt computer. It is wired, and as far is I know I think it uses 50mA.

I'm planning to get one tomorrow. I'll try to but cannot guarantee, depending on the price.

ok.

I don't really like to spend $30USD buying a new power supply. Any suggestions where I can get one that is cheap as well as delivers here in NZ?

Thank you for your time attempting to help me. I truely appreciate it :)

Don't know much about the NZ market or what type of AC plugs you have... many of the newer smartphones and tablets have larger capacity power supplies now days in the 1.0 - 2.0amp range. I found a number of the discontinued HP and Blackberry Playbook power supplies online for around $5 US that not only had longer attached cords but had 1.8amp supplies. Didn't take people long to figure out that they worked great for Kindle Fires and other high powered devices so they didn't stay cheap for long.

I see Amazon has essentially the same thing right now for around $13 US, not sure if you have access to a more local version of the same. Blackberry Playbook Powersupply 1.8amp Again that is for a US style AC plug though.

Need to be wary of cheap ones though on places like eBay as many of them are not what they report to be.

Check out the Wiki as well as there is a long list of verified power supplies:
http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeriphera ... r_Adapters

And check with other NZ users as to what they are using.

Since MircoUSB power supplies are now standard with just about everyone but Apple, I tend to snap them up when I find them cheaply as I can always find a use for them for me or a family member or co-worker.

Raspi-config has an option to extend the partition. You just select that option and on the next reboot it...just happens.

I used a Compac key board and got the 2 or 3 random character bounce problem you got.
Used a remote keyboard and it worked fine.

Hmm.. Sorry if I have not replied for a few hours/days but here goes:
I found a charger for an apple product that is compliant with their "mobile", "superior" and "useful" products located here:
http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecific ... ID=8345363

So I was wondering whether this item will be suitable as a power supply for my Raspberry Pi so that I can freely use it. Although it doesn't say what the output voltage it, I am considering it to have a 5v output since it says that it is compatible with apple products.

More info as described when I message one of the members of the store:

Jaycar is another place you might try. The other option if you have a USB to micro USB cable is to look at buying a power strip with a couple of USB ports built in. Everyone always needs more power sockets and I've seen them cheaper than 5v, 1A adapters

I live in New Zealand and this is what I bought: http://www.happymobile.co.nz/usb-wall-c ... a-fast-297 and http://www.happymobile.co.nz/micro-usb- ... versal-268

It works well with the Raspberry Pi, which is more than can be said of the Pi itself.

Wow! Thank you :D
I'll check this out right now and get it as soon as I can. Btw, does it also come with free delivery or do you have to pay for it? Thank you so much! :D

I use the 2012-10-28-wheezy image (16GB SD card) and my 512MB RasPi is booting up fine. I use a cell phone charger with 5V 700mA output and that seems to power up the RasPi ok.

I have had no problem with the power supplies in the raspberry pi kits being sold on Trademe. I buy the Pi from element14. Brent
