Ubuntu image for the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+

Tue Mar 20, 2018 5:44 pm

Hello,

I just got a couple of Rpi 3 B+ and they work really great with the latest Rpi Image 2018-03-13-raspbian-stretch.img. However, I wanted to install ubuntu 16.04.2 or ubuntu-mate-16.04.2, but neither will boot. The red LED turns on and stays on, or in the case of ubuntu-mate it blinks slow 4 times, then fast 4 times, then the same cycle again. I tried these img files with the previous Rpi 3 B and they run fine.

Is there an ubuntu image I can find that will work with the new B+, or is it a known issue?

Thanks

You'll have to wait until they update their bootcode to support the Raspberry Pi 3 B+.

Wrong Forum, you need to ask the U-M developers when they propose to update ther Community Supported Distro:

It appears you need, at the very least, a 3+ .dtb file to cure that.
They seem to have swapped the red and green LED drives

There is nothing to stop you copying across the bootloader files from raspbian to Ubuntu/Ubuntu-mate.

You also need kernel7.img and /lib/modules/*-v7+ to get a bootable kernel.

Ubuntu-mate uses the same kernel as raspbian. So if you've got an old pi 2/3 and run all the updates, the SD card should work in the pi3B+

Ubuntu server uses Ubuntu's own kernel. Somebody will have to see if that works in the 3 B+ . Maybe try 18.04?

One should not have to through acrobatic connotations to have an up and running Ubuntu 16.04.x based releases suitable for RPi 2B / 3B / 3B+

Seems there is no 18.04 ARMHF as yet

This equally applies to all RPi *Nix Operating Systems.....

Are you serious? The pi 3b+ was only released days ago.

Yes there is. It is downloadable for testing like all other architectures.

You can't expect a single version (fork) of an OS that is 2 years old to get support for a new SBC in a matter of days. Ubuntu Mate will get the support eventually, don't worry. They are a bit 'slow' but at least they're LTS (long term support).

Well just use Raspbian Stretch with Desktop always up to date and continual development :D :D

Others are available, not too shoddy for an SBC that's barely a week old.

I don't follow the point you are trying to make. I structured my answer in two parts, one part for Ubuntu-mate and one part for Ubuntu server. It is you who continually merges and confuses the two. I have no idea if the 3B+ will work with an old 3B kernel, but if it doesn't, then the logical step is to try it with the most recent kernel. That is in 18.04.

I'm sure you are going to whinge that it is only for the pi2. To which I'll answer if you can't follow the instructions to convert it to the pi 3, then you have no right to be using a server image. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ARM/RaspberryPi ... n_the_Pi_3

OK folks, it looks like I stirred some controversy here, but I have a couple of comments:

- As far as I'm concerned I tried both Ubuntu and Ubuntu-mate, (both 16.04) I know they are not the same. Neither will boot. The Rpi 3 B+ works fine with Raspbian Stretch, there are no power supply problems. I use the official Raspberry Pi power supply.

- The reason I'm trying to run Ubuntu is that I want to use ROS-Kinetic-full and it's on Ubuntu that it is best / well supported.

Someone pointed me to the ubuntu-mate forum, and indeed there are several people who report the same issue with Rpi 3 B+

I agree that it may be too early to expect full support on such a newly released board. In any case, I confirm that it works superbly with the latest release of Raspbian Stretch.

Lastly, I'm in the process of downloading ubuntu 18.04 as suggested here and will report on how and if it works. Though I'm not sure it will solve my problem as my ultimate goal is to run ROS-Kinetic with the rviz and gazebo.

Cheers

It is one responder playing devils advocate, not accepting a RPi 3B+ pre-built image is not available at this time for Ubuntu or a Ubuntu Flavour...

...could not find a ARMHF Ubuntu 18.04 download suitable for Raspberry Pi 2 / 3B / 3B+ despite googling.

It's not 100% what you're looking for, but maybe you could try Raspbian + ROS Kinetic? A lot of the instructions are for Raspbian Jessie while you need the latest Raspbian Stretch for the Pi 3B+, so this might not work but it's worth a try.

Firstly, why are you posting in a Ubuntu thread, when it is clear you have no interest or knowledge in using Ubuntu on the raspberry pi? Apart from de-railing this thread (like I've seen you do countless times) you've contributed nothing.

You won't find a preinstalled version of 18.04 for the 3B+. Why on earth would you expect to?

You won't even find a server version for the 3B. I don't see the problem with this either. Ubuntu cannot support every Arm board variation. Especially when they are concentrating on Ubuntu core/snap packages.

That does not mean the 3B or 3B+ cannot currently run Ubuntu/Ubuntu-mate.
