Kindly forgive me if this question has already been addressed:

For over a year, I have been using a Pi 3B in the programming and construction of a robot I'm designing. So, I have been doing regular "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" operations to keep my SD card up-to-date (and now running Stretch). I have also done many "apt-get install" operations to load the SD card with other software that supports the robot's Java programming.

So, can I take that Pi 3B SD card (or a clone of it), and install it into a new Pi 3B+, boot up, and keep on going? Perhaps with another "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade?
I believed that to be the case, based on some other posts, but it turned out not to be, because I was running NOOBS as a front end for Raspbian vs. LibreElec. If you are booting right into Raspbian, you might not have the problems I did. At the very least, make sure you do one last update/upgrade before moving the card. And clone the card too.

Thus, a definite maybe.

I keep forgetting the 'NOOBS' case. There you also need to update NOOBS itself by copying the new files over with the exception of recovery.cmdline.

Take a backup first.

I haven't used NOOBS since I first started working with my Pi 3B. I do indeed plan to do one last-minute update/upgrade before I clone my current 64 GB SD card onto a brand new one (also 64 GB, or maybe a 128 GB?) . Then I'll boot up the 3B+, straight into Raspbian's windowed GUI, just as I've been doing regularly for months. Then, I'll immediately update/upgrade or dist-opgrade, as was recommended above.

Can I use Pi3B+ without heatsink?

You can use *any* Pi without a heatsink. The Pi3B+ will do better without one than the Pi3B, though.

will there be an ability to use apps like deluge after the next update or can you now and I have done something horribly wrong, I have also noticed that you can not install matchbox-keyboard or florence... what is the mistake or is it something to look forward to? :?: :?: :?:

Probably best to start your own thread about specific problems and give a fuller description of what you're doing and what the results are.

Hello, I have an information which is Pi3B+ has new USB boot up function, Is it correct? If so, I'd like to know how to setup in USB. I could not found USB boot set up option procedure.

My 3B+ does not start with 4 long + 4 short blinks of green LED. The red LED is off in this time. Can this happen because of low power? I used the old adapter of RPi 1B+ which is 1A.

Yes.

Note that Raspberry Pi 3B+ does consume substantially more power than its predecessor. We strongly encourage you to use a high-quality 2.5A power supply, such as the official Raspberry Pi Universal Power Supply.

Create an OS image (FAT boot partition plus EXT4 root partition) on your USB device. Connect it to your Pi3B+ with no SD card in the slot. Connect the power to the Pi3B+. It will boot (probably...not all devices work).

For the benefit of other searchers.

Starting with the 2017-04-10 release of Raspbian you can install a working Raspbian system to a USB mass storage device by copying the operating system image directly onto your USB device, in the same way that you would for an SD card. To perform this step, follow the instructions here, remembering to select the drive that corresponds to your USB mass storage device.

Once you have finished imaging your USB mass storage device, remove it from your computer and insert it into your Raspberry Pi 3.
( @W.H.Heydt has accurately summarised this, but a reference to the Raspberry Pi Foundation source may be useful. )

Don't you have burn / program the "one time" bit for USB boot "without an SD card" to work though?

Thank you very much for your information. It's very easy to setup the USB boot up. Just only to make a copy the files in USB memory than I can progress the setup procedure. Thanks a lot.

If USB boot OTP bit is enabled, is it still possible to boot from SD card? Also, if the USB is not bootable (no active partition) - will RPi continue booting from SD card?

Yes, if booting from USB fails the fall back is to try and boot from SD card.

I believe the default is to try the SD first, if that fails then it moves onto USB/PXE after a short delay.

I hope Pi 3B+ supports 64GB SD cards. Here is a new promising model:

PS: WD has the same with 32GB as well.

It does as mine is running on one. (a Samsung EVO Plus)
But it also works in all my other older Pi.

Every previous model of RPi has supported the use of 'SD' [or SDHC] (or more recently, microSD[HC]) cards of any capacity that can be purchased.

Is there any reason to think the RPi3B+ might be more restricted in this respect?

64GB is SDXC, not SDHC. 32GB is the limit for SDHC.
