An odd request, but I haven't seen any images of the backside of the Raspberry Pi 3 B+... Probably not notable because it doesn't have the (previously shiniest part of the Pi) wireless chip there anymore.
There's such an image on Pimoroni's Pibow 3B+ page: https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/pibo ... i-3-b-plus

So what exactly is meant by saying "improved usb boot support"? Also: is running raspbian off a fast usb 3.0 thumb drive still faster than running off an fast microSD card on the Pi 3 B+? Thanks

does it have to be Stretch, or will good old Jessie still work as well ??
mind you, I don't need 5 GHz wifi, as I have an ethernet cable.
I've asked the same question on the blog page and both Eben Upton and Simon Long answered. They don't plan to make the new firmware available for Jessie via apt-get upgrade.
That's what apt pinning is for -- see my post above ;)
Yeah, I've seen our post and agree that it is a better solution.

If the assumption is correct that all the magic happens in kernel and firmware packages on Jessie you need a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/stretch.list with these contents and a file called e.g. /etc/apt/preferences.d/99kernelandfirmware with those contents

Code: Select all

Package: firmware-brcm80211 raspberrypi-bootloader raspberrypi-kernel
Pin: release n=stretch, origin archive.raspberrypi.org
Pin-Priority: 1000

Package: *
Pin: release n=stretch, origin archive.raspberrypi.org
Pin-Priority: 490

Package: *
Pin: release n=jessie, origin archive.raspberrypi.org
Pin-Priority: 500

I already orderd today. Can I ask you question, please. Can I used my 32gb microcard from my older rpi-3 to newest rpi-3B+?
Why would there be any reason you cannot? Its almost the same system.

All Pi models can interchange SD cards (provided the right adaptors are present if required.)
I tell you why.
(1)The older model will overheated and crashed during installed OpenCV 3.4.1
(2) It will overheated when using OpenCV 3.4.1.
The model 3B+ is very cheaper from the pihut :D :D :D
So the actual question is not whether you SD card will work in the new Pi, but whether the software on your SD card will work on your new PI?

I' m confused. What are you trying to do?

Leaves the question, what does the reference do in config.txt.

It was mentioned several times now, Dougie e.g.

I do not know where the safe_mode_gpio settings are documented? safe_mode_gpio=4 had to do with giving more power coming from the USB ports, but also, not afaik official documentated?

It's related to pre-release boards and firmware only - I guess Dougie was one of the lucky few.
It's not required on any production boards.

hi all,

so I've got the latest and greatest pi 3b+ and i was planning to simply swap out the SD card from the old Pi3.
I updated via apt beforehand... upgrade and dist-upgrade.
But here's the wierd thing, the new pi won't boot with the old updated sd card. I even plugged into a TV to see if I could see more and yes, I only get to the lightening bolt - so a power problem? V odd though as my PSUs are high amp rated and I've tried more than one. I've now burned a fresh sd card from the latest raspbian raspbian Stretch Litem, Minimal image based on Debian Stretch, Version: March 2018, Release date: 2018-03-13 - and it boots fine - so not power after all ?!

So any ideas what I can do to my old card to get it to boot in the new Pi 3b+? (i've got lots of softwre etc on it, pihole/ home assistant etc, so don't really want to start again).

do i need to try rpi-update (tried earlier but took ages and thn hung), so rebooted and reverted? Something else to try?

Some details below...

thanks...

Easy to check for BTW:

Code: Select all

perl -e "printf \"%19b\n\", $(vcgencmd get_throttled | cut -f2 -d=)"
This outputs a bunch of 0 and 1 that have to be interpreted this way:

Code: Select all

1010000000000000000
|||             |||_ under-voltage
|||             ||_ currently throttled

As @fanoush already spotted: you're missing both firmware and kernel (.dtb) support on your SD card. So new board can't boot with this installation. Still curious about the output of (even when running on your old board):

Code: Select all

perl -e "printf \"%19b\n\", $(vcgencmd get_throttled | cut -f2 -d=)"

Great news!

I would like to ask if anyone already made some heat dissipation tests. Does heatsink still recommended for hot and dry countries (northeast brasil, in my case)? Is there any advice about using heatsinks on the new model?

Thanks;

Hi All,

My first 3B+ just arrived (to go with countless others) and I was suprised to get the power (lightning bolt) and failing to boot - even though its plugged into a Genuine Pi PSU ? Granted its rated 5v 2A - not 2.5A, but suprised none the less...

Greg... see my stuff above - going through this stuff right now... Lightening bolt.

Not power though as I tried a fresh SD card from the latest image and it works.

I'm trying to get my original build to work in the new machine.

for some reason you have old bootloader

Code: Select all

raspberrypi-bootloader 1.20170703-1
it is unlikely that version from 2017/07/03 is recent enough
try sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
EDIT:
hmm when also seeing
you have quite interesting mix of stretch wheezy and jessie repositories can you remove the jessie and wheezy one?
