Since the RPF does not want it's feet held to the fire of a delivery date for a new version, the will not say.

Download, install, and update/upgrade your system.

Asking when the next release of whatever is the current "Insert Toy Story Name" here is not a question that makes much sense. As the previous poster notes, all you can do is update/upgrade what you've got and you should be current.

The questions that *DO* make some sense (although they will be met with the usual stonewalling) are:

1) When is the next major hardware release? (And what will it be?)

and

2) When is the next "major version" (i.e., a new Toy Story Name) of Raspbian going to come out?

P.S. I think there actually is a schedule for the 2nd question. But I don't know any more than that.

They get released when they get released, which is when they are ready. That's about the only plan.

As raspbian is based on "stable" distribution of Debian the release of new versions raspbian follows some time after the release of a new Debian.

As the "stable" distribution of Debian is currently at Debian 9 "stretch" raspbian is actually up to date.

The next release of Debian is codenamed "buster" — no release date has been set.

Of course updates for raspbian are issued in the back ground so as long as you do apt-get update, apt-get upgrade regularly you will have the current up to date version.

I'm not so sure I like the name "Raspbian Buster"

Its rather foreboding.

Ok, only asking because I need the firmware with polophony that sounds ok from jdb and to upgrade makes rapbian unstable so I have to wait for the official release, also the enabeling of the sshd nightmare is not something I want to do more than one more time in my life.

The next release is make it or break it for me!

I'm curious. What is "polophony" and "jdb"? A google search is not satisfing my curiosity.

Presumably if its some kind of gadget that requires firmware, that firmware can be supplied to it from the current stable Raspbian.

Also, in what way is the enabeling of the sshd a nightmare? It's not difficult.

I am happy to hear that you were able to figure it out and get it to work. Well done.

Why thank you, n67.

Now, it was not my intention to boast how clever I am because I figured out how to get sshd working. After all I don't recall ever having to do anything to get it to work.

My intention was that perhaps our OP would like to say what the problem was. Then we could sort it out for them. This should not be a problem anyone is having.

Actually the next version will be called Bullseye. Is that any better?

With perfect certainty, we can now reveal -

Mid-March 2018.

A new release was needed to support the then-new RPi3B+.
