If this entry is missing in the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:

Code: Select all

scan_ssid=1
this is what I wrote earlier but latest update fixes wifi problems without need to add scan_ssid.
looks like they updated broadcom drivers few days ago.
unfortunately wifi fix breaks now bluetooth, my gues next update they will break wifi again but will fix bluetooth so drama can continue.

Code: Select all

or try this with example.mp3 from raspberrypi.org and player will hang

i found a workaround/fix for this Problem in another German speaking forum: https://forum-raspberrypi.de/forum/thre ... /?pageNo=4. It is assumed there, that the problem occures when the SSID is hidden, not send.

If this entry is missing in the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:

Code: Select all

scan_ssid=1
the old firmware isn't affected, but the new FW crashes the system!

So, to be able to update your Raspbian, just make sure that you add given line into your /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf before you update, and you should have no more problems with this. It worked flawlessly in my case. Best regards and happy hacking (-:
According to the cited reference above, this did seem to have resolved the issue for a RPi 3 B device, however did not cure the problem for RPI 0 W device as experimented with viewtopic.php?f=63&t=204882&start=75#p1278383.

We rolled back the wireless firmware to an earlier version because of issues with it. apt update will get that earlier version.

I'm currently testing a fix, so hopefully we will be able to go back to the newer firmware in the near future. This should fix a multitude of things, but breath holding not recommended.

Without wishing to add to the fine details, after updating I too have seen a loss of WiFi communication to another Pi Zero W providing an access point.
I am presently logged on to my Pi(AP) from a Win7 laptop (PuTTY) and a Samsung Galaxy (Terminus); but...
Pi(m) Zero W after updating gives me wlan0 "carrier lost" with wpa_ pointing at Pi(AP); however...
Pi(m) Zero W after updating will happily connect wlan0 when wpa_ points at my Hitron router.
I've worked my way there and back on most (if not more) of the suggestions here-in, but doubt I could answer any questions as to where I'm presently at in the great scheme of things.
Pi(m) Zero W - stretch 9.3 4.9.59+ armV61
Pi(AP) Zero W - stretch 9.3 4.9.59+ armV61
Pi(m) is also connected to my router via a usb Eth0 and has been logging midnight temperature reports for over two weeks.

Please update to the latest version Raspbian, that has the latest wireless fixes. Might help.

@carriba: thank you for your time and patience in pushing this issue.

I received a ZeroW yesterday morning (my Pi #16 but my first ZeroW) and spent most of the day trying to get internal wifi to cooperate. The board worked fine with a USB wifi dongle attached, so I was coming around to the idea that the board needed to be returned.

I eventually stumbled upon this thread. By your 5th post you had presented enough information (& demonstrated your competence) to indicate that there was a software problem (e.g. a working board that stopped after a straightforward update/upgrade, but would still run with an earlier software version, & so on).

I admire your tenacity. And thanks to James for the fix.

Hello,
I've got the same problem after an upgrade of my upgrade from a fresh 2018-03-13-raspbian-stretch-lite.img
Wifi worked before the upgrade.

After a reboot, wifi doesn't work but if (via serial console) I launch:

Code: Select all

# /sbin/wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
wlan0: Trying to associate with <my_router_mac_addr> (SSID='<MY_SSID>' freq=2412 MHz)
wlan0: Associated with <my_router_mac_addr>
wlan0: WPA: Key negotiation completed with <my_router_mac_addr> [PTK=CCMP GTK=CCMP]
wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-CONNECTED - Connection to <my_router_mac_addr> completed [id=0 id_str=]
##<Ctrl+C>##
nl80211: deinit ifname=p2p-dev-wlan0 disabled_11b_rates=0
^Cp2p-dev-wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING
wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=<my_router_mac_addr> reason=3 locally_generated=1
nl80211: deinit ifname=wlan0 disabled_11b_rates=0
wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-TERMINATING
wifi works and I can ping my pi-zw from another computer until I break the process.

Re: No Wifi connection to Pi Zero W after Raspbian update

It seems I have a Deja-vu: Just flashed the "2018-03-13-raspbian-stretch-lite.img" image, and my Pi Zero W can boot up and connect to a "hidden" WLAN AP (an AP that does not broadcast its SSID) and everything works fine with the usual "wpa_supplicant.conf" text file with the following similar contents:

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=GB
network={
	ssid="MyWifiNetworkSSID"
	psk="password"
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}
Here an extract of the /var/log/syslog relevant entries:

Now, when doing today the usual "sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get -y upgrade", my Pi Zero W device does not seem to connect to the "hidden" WLAN AP anymore. Nothing has changed on the WLAN AP device! With a Wifi scanner application I can even not find the Pi Zero W device in my local network.

The packages that have been updated are the following:

I plugged in an Ethernet dongle on the USB OTG port of the Pi Zero W device, and skimmed through the /var/log/syslog file and have found the following relevant entries:

And no further entries that the WLAN adapter of the Pi Zero W device could have been connected successfully :-(

It seems to me that a regression has been introduced here with the latest update that the WLAN interface of a PI Zero W device can no longer subscribe to a WLAN AP hiding / not advertising its SSID.

Any observations from others?

Try adding "scan_ssid=1" in the network section of wpa_supplicant.

Adding this option, this time it did do the job as demonstrated with the /var/log/syslog entries:
