(How) Can I copy a compiled binary from Pi 2B to Pi 3?

Sat Jan 27, 2018 10:30 pm

Linux n00b here.

I am following these instructions to compile the hw accelerated version of ffmpeg on my Pi 2B. It's taking a long time.

Once it's finished, can I copy the compiled binary over to my Pi 3? Is it as simple as copying the binary file "ffmpeg"? Or do I need to copy other stuff over as well?

Thanks!

I think a build of ffmpeg includes libraries such as libavcodec and many other things, all of which need to be copied to the other system. Assuming you installed ffmpeg in /usr/local, type "find /usr/local -mmin -30 -print" immediately after "make install" to list all files which have been modified in the last 30 minutes. These are the files which need to be copied.

An executable compiled on a Pi2B should run on a Pi3B, but to be sure it would be best if the Pi2B it's compiled on is a Pi2Bv1.2. The Pi2Bv1.2 and Pi3B have the same model of ARM CPU cores.
