Model A coming?

Mon Oct 08, 2012 7:41 am

Hi
I've seen that the delivery time from Farnell has increased from 19 to 24 days.
Remembering that both the UK and the Chinese factory are producing Pi's this is odd.
So I gues the UK factory is doing something else, Model A for example?
Are there any news on this ?

no - well yes but no
in a recent interview with eban he says how Farnell are going into a period of *planned Shortage* - not exactly sure what that means but it's only temp
you can still get a delivery in a couple of days [well last week at least]

Model A's will come available when the demand for Model B has slackened off.....

Model A's are what you need for very low power solutions systems

I believe the schedule is still for a release before Xmas. However, as we all know, schedules are scheduled to change at any moment.

I think, what we've learnt, is that any published schedule has about a 0.001% chance of being met :(

I don't know if this is the official position, but that's pretty much what it looks to me from the outside.

One year ago, I could understand that. Now it's a bit different. Production and distribution of Model B has been going on for months. To put a number on my gut feeling, a published schedule for Model A would have a 80% chance of being met. But then, we really don't have an official schedule for Model A.

There's stuff in the works to ensure supply, and I am absolutely confident you'll see them by Christmas. It requires a bit of a bump in manufacturing capacity - the same PCBs are used for both versions, so to produce any Model As we have to sacrifice some Bs at the moment, and we aren't prepared to do that while there's still a giant backlog with one distributor. It'll take a little while to spin up, but we are working on it VERY actively.

Hey Liz,
don't get put down by all those spoiled kids out there (as I'm sure you are not); just keep on rockin'. You and the whole team have my deepest respect. Keep up the good work, we'll wait ;)

I was wondering if the model A will be suffering form the same USB problems as model B? AFAIK the lan/usb hub chip cases problems.
Will modem A have more reliable USB?

The model A will have only one USB and no hub at all and no Ethernet, you will have to use a hub to add more usb devices to an A model.

I have been actively waiting for an A model I think it will be less problematic in the end, but with that said the B is getting better all the time. (some people want perfection out of a 35$ device that they can not even achieve with their much more expensive PC's and Mac's or even Linux boxes)

The A will come when it is ready and I will buy one when that happens.

Keep it coming foundation I love what you are doing.
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.

Thanks Liz, I sure respect what you and the foundation are doing, and I trust you when you say that we'll see Model As by Christmas. That you are working to ensure supply is also great.

My Raspi with 3G modem is down to just one crush every ~6housr. Previously it was not working at all :)

I'm also very happy with even a little broken USB but having GPIO and i2c and SPI

The LAN/USB hub chip problems are driver problems from the SoC USB drivers. These are being worked on very hard. There has been many fixes pushed and more are on the way. The A Model does not have the LAN "Chip" at all so does not have ethernet either. Just one USB port. This in conjunction with a powered hub should help WiFi reliability, as there will be no fighting between the Ethernet and WiFi. This "fight" has mostly been fixed now anyway. Power consumption is going to be better on the A model also.
