How many have been sold?

Fri Oct 05, 2012 1:04 am

Recently I wanted to get a project underway under BOINC and was advised ...
I don't know if the Raspberry Pi will be popular enough to justify it
so I ask ... how many Raspberry Pi's are there out in the wild right now? How many more projected in 12 months time?
Thanks Ray
FWIW the "toy supercomputer" achievement is getting kudos around the globe.

Sold so far...somewhere pretty near 500K.

Expected to be sold in the first year...about 1 million. (Depends on how you define "first year".)

Expected annual production rate: 2 million.

Annual sales of PCs...well over 100 million.

Happy days. :D PC sales = the might of Microsoft & Apple.
So Raspberry Pi, relatively, is doing rather well. I hope it really catches on

Before launch there was excitement about them expecting to sell 20,000.

To be fair it's the unexpected (by foundation) XBMC usage that has driven a large amount of initial sales, not the "educational hacking" use case.

Talking to Eben et al at the launch drinkies, ISTR that original expectations/hopes were about 30k in the first year. So selling 100k or whatever it was on the first day was quite something. And selling 1m in the first year was totally out of anyone's sights, and goes some way to explaining the need to get RS And Farnell on board soon after.

I'd disagree on the XBMC thing - fairly small percentage I reckon, but no real way of knowing I suppose.

Not so long before launch there were credible concerns that 10000 units might be a bit ambitious. We used to celebrate the number of new members and got really excited when various milestones (500, 1000, 2000....) were passed. ( http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... f=62&t=441 )

There were also discussions on how many boards should be produced ( http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... f=62&t=631 ). No one was thinking in terms of millions... I just noticed one of the last comments in that thread was one of mine - I thnk I hit the nail on the head!!!
