Onboard WiFi unstable again

Fri Sep 01, 2017 8:54 am

No wlan interface found or it stops working during usage.
As always it happens out of sudden and there are some /var/log/kern.log messages:

I removed repeating lines, for some went on for multiple seconds or nearly an hour, and so this post would take lots of pages to scroll through with the same messages over and over.

Thanks for the report. I'm a bit stuck on another project at the moment - will get back to Wifi asap.

Hi,

just registered here on forum. I was googling on same problem and found this thread. So I'm having same issue.
Today I found the PI in state that I cant connect via wifi, logs show below:

Code: Select all

After finding nothing today I run rpi-update anyway. So now i'm running latest stuff and 4.9.50-v7+ #1035 .
We will see during the night if that helped.

BR,
Gregory

EDIT. Same, wifi hangs after approx 1h from boot.

WiFi is never going to have the security and stability of an ethernet connection. The 3B wireless connectivity was so poor on mine that I had to install an outboard, full sized antenna which of course, voided any warranty the second I put the soldering iron to the board. I can't speak for the Zero W as I have heard that it was improved over the 3B but those tiny chip antennas will never have the functionality of a full size antenna...size and signal capture area really do matter and wireless gets no special breaks from the laws of physics.

That said, you have not identified the model Pi you are using or your distance, floors, walls, file cabinets, etc, between your Pi and the router or AP. If your signal strength is on the edge when it is working, atmospheric conditions can cause it to disconnect.

You might have better luck with a USB wireless dongle, especially one of the models with a movable full size antenna such as the Panda PAU06.

I have tested Pi Zero W wireless connectivity with built in antenna inhouse with direct line of sight, and got good connection quality (30/70) over 55m as well as over 170m(!):

It also voids the wIfi type approval, which in many places makes it illegal to operate.
If you do need an external antenna, connect it through a dongle designed for an external antenna. Avoid upsetting the boys in blue or men in black suits. 8-)
