GIS on Raspberry Pi

Just a quick topic about what GIS packages people have got to run on their Raspberry Pi.
So far i have got working

• Navit (car navigation) and
  GRASS - no problems at all

These are both on a Raspbian Wheezy HardFloat OS. (Turbo boosted of course!)

Hi mrtenchy,

I'm yet to receive my RPi, and it could be a while yet. I'm also interested in the GIS capabilities of this device, and was hoping to run GeoServer on it. I haven't quite decided what I'm going to use it for, but my tentative plan is to try and interface it with a remotely located arduino, receive GPS serial data via a wireless Xbee module and write it to PostGIS.

I'll have more details when (if) I receive this thing in the next year or so.....

I have been thinking about qgis, but the holy grail will be when we can access the GPU for processing tasks - someday...

vector based GIS should be pretty straightforward though, with the camera module be interesting to see possibilities for AR

I got a second pi for christmas so considering putting geoserver on to it but not too sure if I'll be able to.

From an initial look it appears the soft float version of debian should be required in order to use java;

Both OpenJDK and the Oracle JDK 8 JVM supports hard float
"The latest Java 8 release is hard float, which is a good thing, because it gives you better performance and the recommended Raspberry Pi build is also hard float. Stay away from anything that says soft, softfp, etc., because it will be incompatible with the hard float JVM."

You can combine the OpenJDK runtime classes with the Oracle JDK 8 JVM to run headfull X11 AWT/Swing applications, there is no reason to use soft-float Debian Wheezy image any more.

I don't know if PostGres is ported to linux on ARM, but I know it supports spatial datatypes.

I will be porting ViewingDale which is not GIS but is more like GeoServer to the Pi. It uses the GPU for most of the processing so with a 512Mb version and a 128Mb GPU mem split then it should work ok. Im not sure how fast it will run tho but the app is designed for slow CPU, fast GPU hardware which is ideal for the Pi. See viewingdale.com or put viewingdale into youtube to see it on windows. The port may take a while to do tho. I have the ViewingDale dice running on linux but not under OpenGL ES2 yet.

I tried the compilation, (because i could not find arm binaries), but with no success.

I have built my own GIS tablet (well, kind of): viewtopic.php?f=37&t=97475&p=734298

Now that the official RPi Display has been released, I will retro fit it into a new panel. It's a great display and uses about the same power as my 5" Adafruit touch screen does and it's larger and brighter! Yes, it is more expensive, at least here in Australia, now that the AU/US dollar rates have changed so much over the last few months.
