HOW do I install and run Eclipse Oxygen for Linux 32 on Raspberry Pi?

Fri Jul 28, 2017 4:35 pm

Apparently I have been posting my stuff on wrong forum.

Problem / set up description

I am unable to run an application "Eclipse" on Raspberry Pi which runs just fine on Unbutu 32 bit OS.

My process follows these steps: On Ubuntu 32 bit OS I access vendor’s site and “download” Eclipse Oxygen package for Linux 32 bits. Setup folder “Oxygen_32”, in dedicated partition on my HDD. Setup folder “Eclipse_Oxygen” as subfolder in folder “Oxygen_32” Copy downloaded file from Ubuntu “Download “ folder to “Eclipse_Oxygen” folder. Extract downloaded file to “Eclipse_Oxygen”. Right click on “eclipse” file in “Eclipse_Oxygen”. Get pop-up menu whose first option is “Run”. Selecting “Run” will activate Eclipse Oxygen software and I can build and run simple C++ “Hello world” application.

On Raspberry 32 bit OS I access vendors site and “download” Eclipse Oxygen package for Linux 32 bits. Setup folder “Oxygen_32”, in dedicated partition on my working USB drive.

Get pop-up menu whose first option is “Open”. Second option is “Eclipse”.

Selecting “Open” will bring up a dialog indicating that I am attempting to run executable file (dos ,exe?) and give me an option to do that. After selecting “yes, execute...” ,there is no feedback from OS and NOTHING indicating that the Eclipse app is being activated.

Selecting “Eclipse” activates “Eclipse 3.8” and NOT the Eclipse Oxygen version I am after.

PS command line “apt-get install eclipse “ or “apt-get install eclipse-cdt” will ALWAYS install “Eclipse 3.8”

Apparently I am accessing wrong repository using command , but why I cannot make same download / extract process used on Ubuntu OS work on Raspberry Pi?

Linux 32 is for x86 CPU Architecture....

...the Raspberry Pi is ARM CPU Architecture

The de-facto Raspbian Jessie is ARMHF Operating System

Both Raspbian Jessie and Ubuntu Mate 16.xx (Community edition for Raspbery Pi) only offer version 3.8.1

Oh yeah. Eclipse is written in Java. So it should run on any architecture, Intel, ARM. etc that has a JVM.

Of course it never does.

Given how bloated and slow Eclipse is anyway I would never think of using it on a Pi.
Memory in C++ is a leaky abstraction .

OK, if I want to run Eclipse on RPi - whose business it is?
Besides Eclipse 3.8 does not run any slower that the rest of the RPi apps.
Not to doubt your opinions either , but seeking the truth.
I shall pose the question in eclipse forum.
