1 Ghz and RAM Brand

Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:39 am

To add to the 1 GHz club topic, i am curious if the ability to reach it is effected my what brand of RAM your Pi has. So i posted a little Poll here to see.

I can reach it with Samsung RAM

Samsung RAM too.

Is it just me or is the poll not rendering as one might expect it to? FF 15.0.1 Ubuntu 10.04LTS

It looks funny on Chrome with Ubuntu too.

Works neither on the Farnell (unstable) nor on the RS board (didn't boot). Unfortunately no multiple selections and just one shot in this poll.

I suspect the quality of the power supplied to the Pi will have a lot more bearing than who made the RAM....

Well, the people who cant get to 1GHz will probably ignore this thread, but so far it looks like more overclockers have samsung RAM, thats for sure.

You can actually blame this thread on the wiki, it actually says something about overclocking and RAM brand...

Certainly I found problems with Hynix at stock voltage, but ramping the RAM voltage, e.g.

Code: Select all

arm_freq=1000
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6
over_voltage_sdram=4
works just peachy for me.

I've 2 Pi's and they both run fine with the turbo setting.
But I added cooler to them, can't get them over 62 degree - and they are in a case.

I think you'll find that ram isn't the issue with failing overclocks. If you leave core at the stock 250 then I think most will find 1G stable.

My pi runs at:

Code: Select all

arm_freq=1100
core_freq=500
sdram_freq=500
over_voltage=6
Hynix RAM. Seems stable for 4 days although only the CPU is working at 100% (tring to mine some bitcoins :D).

I originally had mine running @ 900 w/no overvolt... tried 950 but it hung during boot, so I just backed down to the known good 900... (raspbian BTW)

...and yes RAM will matter for OC as the three options all overclock everything and some RAM just won't be able to handle it... I don't know what the exact specs of the RAM used but I'll bet the Hynix was bare minimum reqs while the cheapest samsung RAM might've been higher specced(just guessing but it seems likely if non-samsung RAM is failing in OC more often...)

I'd be careful of the SDRAM OV, as it might set the warranty bit(?), but you could try lowering core and/or sdram freqs... might help..

OTOH when I tried the late July alpha RISC OS image, it wouldn't boot @ 900, and so I dumped down to 800(w/o trying anything in between as I wasn't sure if RISC OS just wasnt going to work at anything other stock) which did work...

(I tried the latest RISC OS image(nice mouse droppings gone) but I messed up the screen res somehow so I'm going to reburn the image and this time I'll try a mild overclock again...)

My RP goes to 900 without overvolting and ran smoothly even in open arena and in the new image Quake 3, this PI has the samsung memory, I am now running the turbo mode @1000 with no problems at all.
Lob0426 has his original RP with Hynix memory and could not over clock over 800 and even with the turbo I do not think he can get it to run reliably above 850 with overvolting.
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.
