Hello RPi Desktop June 2017 goodbye PIXEL Desktop

Mon Jun 26, 2017 8:12 pm

I have had time to test drive both of the latest updated Raspbian and Debian x86-32:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/a-rasp ... ming-tools

""We’ve decided we’re going to try to make all new desktop releases for both Pi and x86 from now on""

The boot splash screen now states either:

Welcome to the Raspberry Pi Desktop
Powered by Raspbian

or

Welcome to the Raspberry Pi Desktop
Powered by Debain

Whilst this is a subtle change, I personally feel it is better than PIXEL Desktop, as PIXEL is used by other products, would SL care to comment ??

UPDATE the x86 version is on the downloads page:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/r ... i-desktop/

DEBIAN JESSIE WITH RASPBERRY PI DESKTOP
The Raspberry Pi Desktop OS for PC and Mac - based on Debian Jessie

I am certain it will, but it would be nice to have an insight into why this was changed...

I know there is searching confusion with Google Pixel devices and RaspberryPi Pixel desktop and we'll anything else that uses Pixel, like a monitor or camera or picture.
But it is just a name and perhaps we'll get
Raspberry Pi Desktop, bower by Android Pixel devices ;-)

Roll on the speculation...

So PIXEL it was, which officially stood for “Pi Improved Xwindows Environment, Lightweight”.

I have now noticed that PIXEL has been dropped from naming convention of Raspbian:

Could it be because Google has a trademark on some devices with "Pixel" in their name and the RPF are now collaborating with Google on the AIY project?

That's what I was hinting at above, but to be honest, it's better for branding.
Pixel is generic and doesn't mean anything in RaspberryPi land, in the same way the generic desktop pictures are now used. It's loosing identity.
The big or small RaspberryPi logo means you know what it is (in the sea of similar looking desktops) in screen captures on the web. Now it could be anything unless you look hard enough.

Same with Pixel as a desktop brand, it has no links with Pi.
Even PiXel doesn't really work.

Comes stuck on the front of a MagPi too.

How much cheaper is it to use DVD over and SD or USB?

(Only because I only have one computer with a DVD in it)

A shame to drop the simple and apt Pixel name.
Although I could see how there could be some confusion/issues with the name.
I did briefly think that "Pi Improved Xwindows Lightweight Environment" sounded better, but "Pixle" just doesn't look right.
I would also add that the default desktop wallpaper should feature a Raspberry Pi logo to reinforce the branding.

I already have a vanilla Debian Jessie installation on my netbook. Does anyone know which repositories I need to add in order to install the PIXEL desktop retrospectively?

There is no Pixel Desktop anymore as my post clearly states.......

Regards your issue the "Raspberry Pi Desktop" is a modified LXDE, the package is ''raspberrypi-ui-mods'' though need to have installed LXDE already:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-ui-mods

I put this on my old Acer last week and it's great. I am eagerly awaiting the Stretch-based version and if you need a tester, sign me up.
