Skype for Linux

Fri Jun 09, 2017 1:26 pm

At the moment I'm using Skype for Linux v4.3 under an old version of Ubuntu running on an even older PC. I've just been notified that v4.3 is being 'retired' from July and will no longer work. I can do without the upheaval of upgrading the OS or the PC as all my other applications are running just fine.

So I'm considering my options post-July and was wondering if anybody has had any success with using Skype for Linux Beta on a Raspberry Pi. I need just to be able to send and receive voice calls, not video or text messages. I'm not interested in the browser version of Skype.

I'd try to install the Beta version myself but I'm on holiday at the moment and I forgot to pack a Raspberry Pi.

Thanks.

I've not looked at skype, but if they only provide binaries for skype on linux then you may be out of luck unless they provide binaries aimed specifically for the Pi. What's more likely is that they provide x86_64 and/or i686 binaries which will only work on a normal pc system (you need armhf binaries for the pi and those wont always work on a pi1/zero)

Thanks for the reply. I think you're right.

I've been doing some more searching and I found a solution using the ExaGear desktop which allows x86 applications to run. But that costs EUR 29.95 for the R Pi 3 version. People seem to have Skype 4.3 working but I can't find any references to the new Beta version.

Time to invest in a 21st century PC and a recent version of Linux I guess!

The best solution is to use the WebBrowser version of Skype, better than Exagear crap:

... unless you need the public API. But it turns out that the API has been removed from the latest Linux version anyway.

Those people at Skype really know how to look after their customer base. So the only option is Windoze. All part of the plan...

What did you expect from something that's owned, run and managed by Microsoft?
