Sure, why not?

The instructions may need some reinterpreting for modern Pi, I have not looked, but I'm sure it's possible.
Memory in C++ is a leaky abstraction .

Sorry, I was not so clear.

I simply meant that the Pi hardware has changed a bit since then. As has the operating system and other software. So any instructions from years back may not still work as is, they might need adapting here and there.

It's a very good starting point. If you hit anything that does not work you can always ask here. If any details of the procedure need updating to get it working it would be great if you could publish your new, updated, instructions somewhere.

I would also like to be able to get 3g; the FONA from the instructable is only 2g :(

I want something like this: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1946 but that can access 3g.
What little "breakout modem thingy", that will work with the earlier mentioned instructable, would any of you guys recommend? (I am new to this stuff :D )

I picked up and am using these two

GSM/GPRS. http://sixfab.com/product/gsmgprs-shield/

< 15 Mbps download
< 6 Mbps upload

Both provide location services, the GPRS one via cell tower location, the 3G and 4G have GPS/GLONASS

Both provide access and use via GPIO pins or USB and are powered through GPIO or USB

The problem I am having at the moment is with the touchscreen, an old 3.5" tft resistive touch screen that appears to use a kernel update that causes problems with the boards. I'll probably bite the bullet and get a new capacitive touch one rather than continue to mess around with the old screen.

so you are saying that the Pitft doesn't work with RPi3 at this time; so I should try another RPi3 compatible screen? (I have vaguely heard something like this before)
