Help with buying a Raspberry Pi

Fri May 12, 2017 10:37 am

Hi there

I have very little knowledge about Raspberry Pi. My dad has been asking for one for ages and I would love to buy one for his birthday, but he is a retired specialist programmer and used to build all sorts of electronic goodies, including a hi-fi and oscilloscope. He has been curious about Raspberry Pi and I think he really wants to play with it.

My problem is that I want to buy him enough bits to make it interesting, but I have no idea what to get. I am assuming some sort of base unit and then add-ons. What would I need?

I hope you can help me!

All the best

You'll need
  • One Raspberry Pi 3B (or Zero W)
  • One 8GB (or larger) microSD card
  • One power supply 5V 2.4A
  • One keyboard
  • One mouse
  • One HD TV
  • One HDMI cable (or MicroHDMI to HDMI cable)
Let him get started with that then look at buying stuff to do electronics with his RPi.

If he's a tinkerer there are a variety of kits out there that may grab his attention, an example...
