Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card?

Fri Sep 21, 2012 2:51 am

Has anyone, or is anyone working on using an Eye-Fi SD Card for Wireless connectivity? I'm going to ask a friend, who's a bit of a Debian Guru to see if we can get it working from a standard Debian Desktop Distro, and if so, I don't see why it couldn't be adapted to work for the RPi.

AFAIK the eye-fi firmware hasnt been hacked at all (yet), so it just uploads jpg files, doesn't work as a general wifi net connection

There is python code out there to receive them locally, and the card will actually send any data/text file if you rename it to .jpg

Look at this for a full function card realised now/soon:

Palm did release an SD wifi card for the tungsten/treo a looong time ago - remember them?
might be some mileage in finding one of those too (eBay?)
Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !

That's something I guess. I've been talking to an Eye-Fi rep on their Facebook page, and they suggested joining their forums, and placing a feature request. All in all, if they can remove those restrictions, or even put out a model which would allows us to use it as a WiFi device they'd stand to make a bit of money from it.

When Palm devices were all the rage, wifi connectivity wasn't built into them and you had to either buy a PCMCIA card sleeve and a PCMCIA wifi adapter, or you could get SD-card sized wifi adapters. However I don't think they are a mainstream product anymore. Even if they were I suspect that making them work would be quite a chore! Sandisk used to do one I think.

The Palm SD WiFi card is still around (I went for the Palm Tungsten|C when it came out - their first with wifi built-in - still works ... just - it is the reason I still have a WEP accessible access point).

As said above, getting firmware for such devices will be tough - but things might become easier following the SD Card Association announcement earlier this year
