RE: Raspberry Pi 3 Problem

Fri Mar 31, 2017 5:36 pm

Hi everyone,

I bought a Raspberry Pi 3 - (Raspbian Jessie PIXEL - 2017-03-02-raspbian-jessie.img) and I am trying to install a package called: Webmin.

I have been troubleshooting for hours, but can't seem to get it working.

I have gotten the following errors:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/) is another process using it?

E: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the download directory

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
[email protected]:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
dpkg: error: dpkg status database is locked by another process

dpkg: error processing webmin (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
webmin
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1).

When I try to install webmin via apt-get, it just hangs at the line:

Unpacking webmin (1.831) over (1.831)...

No matter what I do it work, I have even tried to purge, remove and reinstall the package but I keep getting the same errors.

Can anyone help me.

Would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Are you running ubuntu ? If so you will probably do better by asking for help on their forums. Most people here run Raspbian.

try doing

Code: Select all

sudo su
then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install webmin
if it works then it was a problem with permissions, but i still dont see why you need to use webmin, just use terminal, its so much easier

oterwise just backup your data on a usb stick and hold shift on startup and reinstall raspian.
Ubuntu users are apt to get this joke

Hey, I tried that, when I use that command I get an error message:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

This is also after a fresh install of Raspbian for a second time.

It is a problem with dpkg, which I don't know how to resolve, any package I try to get wont install.

If I try to install Webmin it just hangs forever.

Even when I formatted I reinstalled raspbian with a new image the newest version it doesnt make sense.

So I think you are now saying that your problem is not actually that you can't install webmin, it's that apt-get won't install anything.

To confirm: this is a straightforward download of raspbian, from www.raspberrypi.org and installed on your pi? Have you done anything else to it after download?

Were there any errors when you went through the install and boot?

The error messages suggest something else might be accessing the packages database. Is this the only thing you're doing? That is, are you doing something like running a 'sudo apt dist-upgrade' and then jumping to another window and trying to do an apt-get in parallel?

The ,messages suggest that the process can't read /var/lib/dpkg/lock and /var/cache/apt/archives/lock. So, what do you get if you do the command 'df' (ie, is there space in your filesystem). What do you get if you do 'cd /var/lib/dpkg' and then 'ls -l'. What do you get if you do 'cd /var/cache/apt/archives' and then 'ls -l'?

On a fully updated Raspbian Jessie with Pixel DE use wget to install WebMin as per their website, though you will need to have an active internet connection:

Hey,

So the webmin installation did not succeed.
The webmin package was failing upon installation at 16%, so I increased the swap space but that did not fix the issue.
Although I was able to get apt-get working again but attempting to install webmin, breaks the system via dpkg.

I followed the steps from the webmin website to install on Debian.
I installed it on Ubuntu 16.10 64 bit and it worked like a charm no issues, 5 minutes.

Thanks.
