USB limits on Pi 3 D-link port

Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:52 pm

Can someone confirm that only one USB port can be connected to external powered USB hub?
I am unable to use wireless USB keyboard / mouse connected to D-link USB hub UNLESS the hub is connected to specific port on Pi. Sorry- I do not know how they count, so I cannot provide better info.

I would like to record ( print) the USB error messages when the port cannot be activated. Is there a way to do that? The printout disappears after the PC runs.

On the Raspberry Pi SBC 1B+ & 2B & 3B models all USB Ports are connected to a LAN9514 USB/Ethernet Chipset/Hub:

dmesg can be used for driver info: http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man1/dmesg.1.html

USB chip

The Raspberry Pi 3 shares the same SMSC LAN9514 chip as its predecessor, the Raspberry Pi 2, adding 10/100 Ethernet connectivity and four USB channels to the board. As before, the SMSC chip connects to the SoC via a single USB channel, acting as a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor and USB hub.

That is take from https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/raspberry-pi-3-specs

So same question as OP.
Why only one Pi 3 B port will connect to external hub ( D-link) and how to capture ( print / file) the initial error.

I believe this is more of USB spec question, not much to do with Pi and I won't get upset if I do not get an answer here.

It really does not matter as long as I can connect to at least one external USB hub.
