Pi Card Imager - android app prepares SD cards without PC

Mon Jan 09, 2017 2:31 pm

Android app to prepare SD cards for Raspberry - NO PC needed !

You can go from blank card to working raspberry pi without touching your "big" PC or Mac,
downloading & imaging all done on the phone.

[update] downloads while unzipping / extracting - so NO local storage needed on phone

Say goodbye to etcher and win32diskimager !

Image Image Image Image

Features:
- Prepare NOOBS/ Raspbian / KODI / Ubuntu SD cards direct on phone
- Writes images to SD Card direct from zip file
- Backup SD Card into .img file (also zipped to save space)

Can setup SD cards without needing root

Device only needs to be rooted if you want to use custom .img files (reading and writing).

Can use the internal SD slot, but it's better to use an USB OTG lead and card reader.

Get it for free on google play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... cardimager

Anyway, comments and requests welcome !

Added in OSMC and LibreELEC (kodi)
- which for some reason are distributed as .gz files instead of zip - so needed specific coding
(the app unzips on-the-fly while writing to save space on the phone)

Ubuntu isn't on there yet for similar reason - it's distributed in .xz format

An example of speed, I was able to get fully working OSMC (kodi) on SD in 3 mins including download !

Jessie Lite in under 10 mins: 4 min download / 5 minute to write to SD (around 4 meg/sec)
[edit] now downloads/unzips on the fly - so twice as quick... 5 mins total.

All on the phone without needing a PC...

Added ability to write/stream a full NOOBS SD card while downloading the zip file
- so no longer needs 1GB storage on the phone.

Seems less users have rooted phones than I thought though - so I'll have to make rooted features (reading/writing .img files) less prominent...

I've never had anything that I needed to root an android phone for, perhaps that situation has now changed.

Excellent idea and thanks for the effort!

Unfortunately I can't seems to find it through a google play search, and if I use your link I get "No eligible devices for app install", despite having three possible OTG options.

Very few people would have a rooted phone or tablet, it's not the norm. Just few enthusiasts in reality.
I rooted some a few years back to play with but now I wait out warranties and they would only get routed after that if support for them was no longer available. Still i'd not root if it didn't need it to put a new rom on.

Do your devices meet the minimum Android version requirements?

 Weird behaviour by google play. Apparently not available in my country. Perhaps I should step across a border. :/

Which country? I thought it was set for worldwide - I'll re- check settings.

[edit] should be ok now - language settings were English only

Switzerland.
I get different messages depending which angle I approach, but this was from your link when already using Android and logged into Google.
If I click the link from a Windows 10 machine, I get the "no devices". Surely an HTC A9 with marshmallow would be eligible?
Searching from the top of Google Play when logged in fails to find the app on any device.
And of course (beside the point) it's not possible to approach Google Play logging in on a PC if you don't speak fluent German, because, well, that's where you are isn't it?
Just one route to the goal would be great.
Thanks Mike
Edit to mirror your edit: Yep, it works now - weird behaviour from google, but languages have been causing strange logic since the internet blew up; 'specially with those chaps.

Currently the list of Images this can install without root is:

NOOBS, PINN and BerryBoot
(i.e. all fat32 based)

Raw disk images (.img) need root access.

I've just noticed that OSMC, despite being distributed as a disk .img actually extracts to a single fat32 partition, and the pi does a NOOBS-style install
So if just those files were repackaged into a zip file, the app could then create OSMC SD cards without root.

[edit] so close - OSMC install is missing the crucial fat32 resize stage - so its a no go

New update:

the app can now create LibreELEC (KODI) SD cards without needing root (a much requested feature !)

Note this is perfectly safe as by default it doesn't delete any files already on the SD

At what point are you having trouble, any error messages?

Also it's advisable to unmount the card/usb in android settings before removing it - some devices need that to avoid sd corruption.

Hey Mike,

Love the app, its been really helpful for me so far.
I'm having an issue though with partitioning when the pi tries to boot my NOOBS Lite install.
NOOBS loads but then gives me an error on the home screen which reads "File system is reporting the free space as 976624 clusters, not 975480 clusters."
I think this might be due to the cache files which android auto-loads on to any external sd card. I have tried unmounting before removing the card but it hasnt made a difference.
For reference, i am running the latest version of android on a galaxy s7.

Have you seen this issue before by chance? Any idea how i could fix it?

Thanks!
Jake

Sorry for the late reply - but this might help someone else:

I think that error means the FAT32 filesystem is corrupt - usually caused by removing the SD card without safely unmounting first
(you get away with doing that 90% of the time)
Drag down from the notification bar, and select "safely remove mass storage",
or go to android settings/storage/unmount SD/USB card

@mikerr
So I'm rooted (sm-j710 running supernova rom v4). Root is superuser and not Magisk. I tried to flash custom images using raspi card imager. Everything available on the raspberry .org site. Lately I'm getting an error no matter what distribution I try.
Error:java.util.zip.Zipextraction: cannot read local header version 45. Thanks in advanced

This app does make things a lot easier when there is no PC accessible. Worked like a charm. The only thing somewhat disappointing is that Google Play is required to get the APK.

It is on google play, but that isn't required - the apk is elsewhere as well

I'm trying to install a new RPI4 with Raspbian Lite. I need to enable ssh to be able to setup the RPI. Is this possible to do directly on a non-rooted phone (Samsung Galaxy S7)? I tried this:
1. format SD directly on phone
2. DL and write Raspbian Lite to SD
3. put file "ssh" in root of SD (which is automatically called "recovery" by phone)...
4. ssh [email protected] --> ERROR `ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.119 port 22: Connection refused`

Is this possible to achieve?

Thanks
Ole

You could try putting the file ssh.txt in the folder - make sure it’s all lowercase.

Not sure if this is still valid as it’s been a long time since I used the txt version...

For NOOBS the SSH file method to enable ssh only works on the very first boot (when NOOBS system formats /creates the partitions).
