The KindleBerry Pi!

Mon Sep 10, 2012 10:17 pm

Hi there,

Just a simple (but tedious) hack I've put together to use my Kindle as a screen for the Raspberry Pi! you can read it here:

http://www.ponnuki.net/2012/09/kindleberry-pi/

For the spoiler ~ connecting an external keuboard, I used a shared gnu screen connection trough usbNetworking to do the magic! It was quite fun to setup!

Yeah it was fun to tinker around and to create! but when I started using it my hopes of being able to live only from the shell account were too high!

Love it. We're really interested in e-ink for low power environments. Unfortunately, displays are still really pricey; we're hoping we'll see prices come down and the displays alone become more accessible for consumers to buy (and we've seen some neat Chinese displays already).

Yes I really like the e-ink display, and would definitely go for a 20inches screen or something similar as a text only main computer, for everything text, from coding to email, RSS feed, forums etc...

Simple, but ingenius. :)

I'll have to look into this; I'm running mine headless as a network and environment monitor for the house, but it would be cool to turn it into a sorta all-in-one.

It says "509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded" at the point of writing this

Any mirrors on this?

Amazing hack, damaru! Really excited about this one! :D
Do you know if this connection is possible with an android device? I have a 10 inch tablet that I would really want to try out...

You could just SSH into your Pi from an Android program like Connectbot? Works for me...
Have a look for Hackers Keyboard too, which includes things like the tab/ctrl/alt keys etc.

Yeah that works. You can also use androidvnc. There's a video on this page of me controlling Pi with my galaxy s2. (Second part of vid). click here
Much more comfortable with Nexus 7 though 8-)

That's amazing ... is there any way to hook up any of these http://www.panelook.com/modelsearch.php ... ton=Search via the DSI port?

I have a fourth generation Kindle. Any idea how to do this on my Kindle? All jailbreaks seem to be for the third generation.

I found one that installs a private key, and one that uses diagnosis mode to temporarily enable SSH over USB. But from there there is no obvious path to installing a terminal emulator.

If it's a Kindle Touch, it's almost insultingly easy: http://www.the-digital-reader.com/2011/ ... uns-html5/ (I've only got experience with one of those and an earlier version a keyboard; both hacked mainly because I couldn't stand the standard wallpaper.)

Abishur's a seasoned Kindle hacker too - I hope he'll drop into this thread later!

No, it's a 4th generation, non-touch. I assume it's more similar to the 3rd than the touch version. I heard some people call the touch version actually the fifth generation, because it's so different.

As I said, I did upload some private key and got shell access, but no way to install the terminal emulator or enable usb networking in normal mode.

I did manage to get a terminal without jailbreaking, inside the web browser, but the latency is much higher I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymei7UwBgX4

I googled around a bit more, but I really can't find anything that goes above 3.1.2 or so. Except for a screenshot hack, which I'm not so much interested in.
