My pi2 died ....again

Wed Dec 21, 2016 5:42 am

My pi2 is used as a NAS and is continuously on for 24/7.
And it just one day stopped working.
Now I've tried various sdcards and none seem to work, they work well on other Pi's.
So whenever I boot my dead pi2 both the red and green LEDs stay solid on.
If this sounds familiar, I've managed to kill another pi2 previously under the same circumstances.

So any idea what might have killed it?
My apologies for shameless YouTube Plugs...

Maybe there was a power surge on the mains connector. Are you using a line conditioner? The power supply itself may also need changing.

No other components were affected including other pi that was on as well. Also the psu is a 5v 4A one from adafruit and works well even now.

I didn't know Adafruit sold 4A power supplies for the Pi. Do you think something like this would help?

Nah... If anything the psu will go out and not the pi... At least not in this manner.
I guessing more like the external hdd drawing a bit more that comfortable current from the rpi over long periods of time.

Also my pc and a few other similar systems are 24/7 powered up and running. Nothing happened to them.

You might be right about the HD. Of course the power supply in the PC is likely to contain better filtering and protection then a wall-wart type power supply. Two Pi's breaking under similar conditions implies something is wrong. Is it possible the Ethernet cable got hit by lightning? I used to have a phone line that wasn't properly grounded: lost two modems due to lightning, but surprisingly not the computer. After that I got better about disconnecting things during an electrical storm. Hope you solve the problem whatever it is so it doesn't happen to the next Pi.

Nope not a single thunder storm for weeks, not even light rain. Most of the cable is fibre and only changes to rj45 in a distribution box on the ground floor and from their everything is inside a well grounded building.

Right now i am replacing it with another board which has a bit more sophisticated and powerful internal power supply and powered using the same adaptor. If this works well for over a year then it was probably the hardrive that might have damaged the pi's internal power supply.

We use about 75 RPi 24x7 and are yet to see one die beyond a few DoAs.

With external hdd powered directly from the pi?

No, be careful about how much is being drawn from the 3v3 line in particular.

Also - micro USB connectors are typically rated at 2A max, so if you need more really it would be better to feed 5V in via the GPIO header I guess.

Only if you are happy to bypass the polyfuse protection.
