I guessing more like the external hdd drawing a bit more that comfortable current from the rpi over long periods of time.
Also my pc and a few other similar systems are 24/7 powered up and running. Nothing happened to them.
You might be right about the HD. Of course the power supply in the PC is likely to contain better filtering and protection then a wall-wart type power supply. Two Pi's breaking under similar conditions implies something is wrong. Is it possible the Ethernet cable got hit by lightning? I used to have a phone line that wasn't properly grounded: lost two modems due to lightning, but surprisingly not the computer. After that I got better about disconnecting things during an electrical storm. Hope you solve the problem whatever it is so it doesn't happen to the next Pi.
Nope not a single thunder storm for weeks, not even light rain. Most of the cable is fibre and only changes to rj45 in a distribution box on the ground floor and from their everything is inside a well grounded building.
Right now i am replacing it with another board which has a bit more sophisticated and powerful internal power supply and powered using the same adaptor. If this works well for over a year then it was probably the hardrive that might have damaged the pi's internal power supply.
My apologies for shameless YouTube Plugs...
