what excatly happens when i set audio to 7.1 and i play a DTS MA track?
If its dts-ma the pi will output the dts core which will show as dts on you amp

@Dom. Makes sense given how late bitstreaming was introduced I suppose. I'd guess it must be about 7/8ths padding if it's compressed! Irritating ....

I thought multichannel PCM is also using (up to) 192khz 8 channel and only differs in headers bits? So the question is, is the high bandwith the problem (so multichannel PCM will also be limited to f.e. 96khz) or is there some problem in setting the correct headers?

Yes, 192kHz 8 channel PCM does not work.
192kHz 4 channel and 96kHz 8 channel both seem to work.

Even if you would be able to output LPCM streams - the pi wouldn't be able to actively decode dtshd or truehd while playing 1080p video, not to speak of licensing...

BUT you could transcode your mkv files' hd audio tracks on your computer to have multichannel lpcm streams for the pi.
24 bit @ 96 kHz should be more than enough even for the audiophiles ;)

How can this be done?

It's a shame to see this thread stalled, I really hope the work required gets the OK it's a feature I've been looking for almost a year.

Do someone know if some progress has been made ??

I'm also ready to pay a few bucks to have DTS-MA passthrough :D

Dom posted above that it appears this isn't possible. http://www.raspberrypi.org/forum/viewto ... 00#p417424

How about the HifiBerry ??
It could be a cheap workaround !! :) It's said that it can Passthrough a 192KHz / 24 bits signal.

Hi all,
just installed a raspbmc image on my raspberry box..
simply fantastic media player, more and more reliable compared to xbmc running on pc!

But I agree with you: I'm ready to pay to have DTS-HD MA / DD TrueHD passthrough!
Any update about it?

If the hardware support is there, would XBMC software support [1] be enough or is something like a driver missing?

The hardware doesn't support it. See http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt ... 00#p417424

The current hardware doesn't, but it would be a great feature for a C or B++ version, should there ever be one. I would also happily pay some extra money for this feature, which would make the Pi THE cheapest, most awesome and finally complete media center.

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum and recently bought a Pi specifically for RASPBMC. I know a little about audio set ups and I think my understanding of audio pass though is correct.

I posted a problem with my set up under trouble shooting which I though might be a Ground loop problem but I'm now wondering if it is something to do with this topic. Would someone mind taking a look please??

Many Thanks

So I've got to ask - does the RPi2 change anything regarding HD audio pass-through?

Afraid not. The gpu (which drives hdmi) is unchanged.

"dom" please tell us you are working on a new Pi C model with HD audio passthrough (eg. DTS-HD) capability, please :-)

Well it looks like hd audio can now be decoded to pcm for truehd and dts-ma so the pi can now do HD audio

For more details see kodi thread.

We can now decode lossless 8 channel TrueHD and DTS-HD to PCM, and output 8 channel PCM at 48kHz. You really need a Pi 2 for this.
So for Blu-Rays we can produce lossless HD audio output.

And if you hadn't seen those builds also support playing the 3D MVC stream from Blu-Rays with full HD frame packed display.
