Pi 3B powering a zero

Tue Dec 06, 2016 12:20 pm

Is it safe to power a zero from a Pi 3B, I'm using an official 2.5 amp 5V supply for the 3 and other than HDMI WiFi Keyboard and mouse nothing else is connected, The Zero will have nothing at all connected. I'm just trying to save a wallwart.

Should be o.k.!
Keep your eyes open for undervoltage warning (yellow flash) in upper right corner; will show you when your RPi3 power is insufficient.

Cheers, if you hear about a small explosion in Dundee you can rest in your laurels and say yeah I did that :D

The power budget for a Pi3B allows for 1.2A for the USB ports. A Pi Zero isn't ever going to use that much. The original Model B (uses the same SoC as the Pi Zero) was spec'd to run on a 700mA PSU, and that included 140mA for each of 2 USB ports.

No explosions in Dundee, The zero is working powered by pi3 even with HDMI connected.

Thanks guys.
