HDMI Cable for Raspberry Pi3 not working correctly

Wed Nov 30, 2016 3:54 am

Hello - Does anyone know if certain HDMI cables will not work with a Raspberry 3? I just picked a Raspberry today, and tried using an HDMI cable (marked high speed HDMI), and all I get is a screen of rainbow colors and it freezes. I then try using a cheap HDMI cable I had laying around (not marked anything), and it works fine. I had some issues previously with this cheap HDMI cable and prefer not to use it. If I go and buy another HDMI to use, is there a specific one to look for?

I have several cables of different brands and lengths. All the cables up to 3 metres work. I have not tested a Pi with my 10 metre HDMI cable. Some are medium priced. None are expensive.

The Raspberry Pi should work with any HDMI 1.3+ cable. I have used my Pi3 with a bunch of different HDMI cables and I have yet to find one that doesn't work.

I'm currently using a Monoprice Ultra Slim Series High Speed HDMI Cable with a generic HDMI-DVI adapter to connect my Pi3 to an Acer AL2032W 20" IPS monitor.

As you can see, it works great!

All of them should as long as you use the standard config.txt file and let the monitor tell the Raspberry to use. On the main part of this site is the info on config.txt and finding out what type of monitor you have and the resolution information for it.

Thanks for the replies. Looking at the hdmi cable that did not work, I think it was from an Xbox one that I had. Maybe this was specific for the Xbox one?

XBox One uses HDMI 1.4, which should work fine with the Raspberry Pi. There is probably something wrong with that cable.

That's the thing, the Xbox one works fine with it, just not the raspberry pi

There is no special cable for the Xbox. The 1.4 if it has Ethernet, can end up not working. The Amazon Basics work just fine. I use a DVI to HDMI pigtail with DVI to a monitor I use. The Config.txt was left as is when I made my SD card. You can go to the other side of this site and pull up the information on how to find out HDMI info for your monitor or tv in the config.txt page. If you leave things alone and just make size adjustments in Pixel, it will be just fine. Tweaking in the config.txt is best if you are wanting audio routed through the 3.5mm, having overscan issues.

That can happen. The cable might be slightly out of spec in a way that does not affect the XBox One. Maybe the cable is a little noisy, and the XBox One has better noise rejection?

Bottom line is, an HDMI cable should work with every HDMI device. If it doesn't, and the device works with another HDMI cable, then there is something wrong with the cable that didn't work.

Or, put another way, an HDMI device should work with every HDMI cable. If it doesn't, and the cable works with another HDMI device, then there is something wrong with the device that didn't work.

You just can't tell, without more testing, which of the two components is out of spec. The pragmatic answer is not to use the combination that fails; find a use for the cable with a different device, and for the device with a different cable.
