A little project report... they say never mix electronics and sea water, well we're sending Raspberry Pi's to sea on kayaks:


This was a commission for the British Science Festival. and it's about extending people's senses under the water using sound, so they can hear temperature variations and marine sounds. All the data is being logged so it can be used for research into topics like climate change - this sort of fine scale data in tidal areas is very hard for scientists to get access to. I did a little interview on Cerys Matthew's BBC Radio 6 show if you want to know more...

There is more technical info, source code and open hardware designs here, but basically: two temperature sensors, a hydrophone via preamp and usb sound card, usb gps and Pure Data running on the Pi to sonify and mix everything together.
